Vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia.

The authors reviewed the records of 50 patients with carcinoma in situ of the vulva seen at the State University of New York at Buffalo affiliated hospitals. Five patients (10%) were found to be immunosuppressed and 12 (24%) had other preinvasive and invasive genital or extragenital neoplasia.

Vulvar cancer affects 2.5 per 100,000 women per year and represents 0.4% of all new cancer cases in the USA. It is primarily a disease of elderly women with those between the ages of 75 and 84 most commonly affected. The majority of vulvar cancers (90%) are squamous cell carcinomas.

Most of them are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), and the precursor lesion for this group is VIN usual type/high grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (uVIN/HSIL) of variable clinical presentation and having a light invasive potential.

Cytology of vulvar squamous neoplasia.

Cytologic findings on various vulvar squamous lesions are described in order to elucidate the usefulness of vulvar cytology. Lichen sclerosus, hyperplastic dystrophy and dysplasia with a few exfoliated anucleate squamous cells could not be differentiated cytologically.
