Seven new species of Rinorea (Violaceae) from the Neotropics

open access: yesPhytoKeys
Over the course of revising the genus Rinorea (Violaceae) from Colombia, field observations and herbarium studies revealed seven new species. Several of the new species described here belong to species complexes that required examination of herbarium material from across the Neotropics.

Belowground effects of ground‐dwelling large herbivores in forest ecosystems

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
This study reviews how ground‐dwelling large herbivores affect forest soil and litter globally. Effects are context‐dependent, vary among species and forest types, and remain poorly studied in tropical forests, highlighting critical gaps in understanding nutrient cycling and ecosystem functioning.

From steps to home ranges: How habitat disturbance influences the movement drivers of an arboreal primate

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
Challenging the narrative about howler monkeys' high resilience to anthropogenic changes, our multiscale analysis reveals the costs of habitat disturbance to their movement ecology. We identify thermal limitations, reduced travel efficiency, and significant spatial saturation.

Fissidens in the Neotropics

open access: yes, 1990
The land areas of the Western Hemisphere south of the United States support over 276 species of Fissidens (Wijk et al. 1962, 1969). This number is approximately 30% of the total number of species known.

Repeated trends in altitudinal gradients of diversity: How habitat filtering and biotic interactions structure ecological communities

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
This study reveals that tropical butterfly communities show remarkably consistent elevational patterns of diversity and phylogenetic structure across regions with contrasting evolutionary histories, demonstrating how regional species pools and local ecological factors jointly shape biodiversity along altitudinal gradients.

New and old species of Ommatius Wiedemann (Diptera: Asilidae) from Hispaniola

open access: yes, 2011
Four new species of Ommatius Wiedemann, the female of O. stramineus Scarbrough, and the male of 0. nigellus Scarbrough from Hispaniola are described. A lectotype for O. gwenae Scarbrough and a neotype for O. cinnamomeus are selected.

Flexible parental care in a songbird correlates with sex‐specific responses to seasonal phenology, mating opportunity and reproductive success

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
This population‐comparative study reveals that male and female parents respond differently to social and ecological conditions. This sex‐specific responsive strategy is related to the incongruent parental care systems across populations in Chinese penduline tits.

Cold storage effects on immature calliphoridae: Survival limits and forensic consequences for PMI estimation

open access: yesJournal of Forensic Sciences, EarlyView.
Abstract This study investigated the effects of continuous refrigeration (4°C ± 2°C and 50% ± 5% RH) on the development and survival of immature stages (eggs, first, second, and third instar larvae, and pupae) of four forensically important blowfly species (Chrysomya megacephala, Chrysomya putoria, Hemilucilia segmentaria, and Lucilia cuprina) compared
