Striking lineage diversity of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 from non-human sources
Due to the necessity to control human-to-human spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the overwhelming majority of the generated data on this virus was solely related to the genomic characteristics of strains infecting ...

Populations of the Short‐eared Owl Asio flammeus have declined across Europe and North America, probably in response to habitat degradation driven by agricultural intensification. However, long‐term evidence linking farmland habitat change to variation in breeding density and reproductive success remains limited.

Contemporary Management of Human‐Caused Hybridization in Mammals: A Review
By reviewing studies on human‐mediated (i.e., anthropogenic) hybridization, we identify key management gaps, including inconsistent identification of admixed individuals, limited population‐level assessments, insufficient social engagement, and unclear management objectives.

ABSTRACT The evolution of the amniote genome is characterized by a striking dichotomy between extreme karyotypic stasis and rapid structural innovation. To identify the mechanisms governing this variation, we provide a comprehensive synthesis of chromosome number and karyotype data across non‐avian reptiles, birds and mammals, integrating a century of ...

The American mink ( Neovison vison ) is a competent host for native European parasites
The American mink (Neovison vison) is a mustelid native to North America that was introduced in Europe and the former USSR for fur farming. Throughout the last century, accidental or deliberate escapes of mink from farms caused the establishment of stable feral populations.

The effects of estradiol and catecholestrogens on uterine glycogen metabolism in mink (Neovison vison) [PDF]
Glycogen is a uterine histotroph nutrient synthesized by endometrial glands in response to estradiol. The effects of estradiol may be mediated, in part, through the catecholestrogens, 2-hydroxycatecholestradiol (2-OHE2) and 4-hydroxycatecholestradiol (4-OHE2), produced by hydroxylation of estradiol within the endometrium. Using ovariectomized mink, our

Tracking Toxoplasma gondii in freshwater ecosystems: interaction of the parasite with the exotic mustelid American mink (Neovison vison) in Spain [PDF]
PósterToxoplasma gondii is a zoonotic protozoan parasite with a worldwide distribution. Felids are the definitive hosts, excreting oocysts in faeces to the environment. Humans and virtually all warm- -blooded species can become infected by several routes

Quantitative assessment of masticatory muscles based on skull muscle attachment areas in Carnivora
Abstract Masticatory muscles are composed of the temporalis, masseter, and pterygoid muscles in mammals. Each muscle has a different origin on the skull and insertion on the mandible; thus, all masticatory muscles contract in different directions. Collecting in vivo data and directly measuring the masticatory muscles anatomically in various Carnivora ...

Canine Distemper Virus Research in China and Future Directions for Conservation 中国犬瘟热病毒研究现状与保护策略展望
ABSTRACT Canine distemper is a highly contagious, severe disease caused by the canine distemper virus (CDV). With a worldwide distribution and ever‐expanding list of susceptible hosts, CDV poses a growing risk for many threatened wildlife species, both in captivity and their native habitats. As a megadiverse country, China is home to myriad endemic and

Wild mink (Neovison vison) as sentinels in environmental monitoring
SUMMARY: For monitoring of endocrine disruptors and other contaminants in terms of exposure levels and possible effects on the reproductive system, suitable sentinel species have to be used. The wild mink is putatively a good sentinel, as it is a semi-aquatic top predator present in all parts of Sweden and it is hunted extensively.
