Common cuckoo nestlings from different populations show varying degrees of mimicry of warbler begging calls, with the Yongnianwa population being the most accurate and the Zhalong population the least. Overall, these cuckoos employ a dual strategy: they conservatively mimic the high‐frequency components of host calls while adaptively adjusting their ...

Nest sanitation as the evolutionary background for egg ejection behaviour and the role of motivation for object removal. [PDF]
Higher interclutch colour variation can evolve under the pressure of brood parasitism to increase the detection of parasitic eggs. Nest sanitation could be a prerequisite for the evolution of anti-parasite defence in terms of egg ejection.

When is the bait worth the risk? A mechanistic model of a compensatory ecological trap in seabirds
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Ecological traps occur when organisms preferentially select habitats that reduce fitness. In seabird–fishery systems, fishery‐derived trophic subsidies can increase foraging success, reinforce habitat preference and indirectly enhance reproductive output or recruitment,

Use of social over personal information enhances nest defense against avian brood parasitism
Interactions with conspecifics influence the behavioral repertoire of an organism, as they apply to foraging techniques, song acquisition, habitat selection, and mate choice.

Functional variation in butterfly egg pore traits: The potential role of climate
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Immobile eggs of terrestrial animals are exposed to variable environmental conditions. Insect egg pores, critical for gas exchange (aeropyles) and fertilisation (micropyles), are ecologically important yet understudied.

Behavioural and physiological responses to brood parasitism and nest predation in two passerine species [PDF]
Brood parasitism and nest predation are two of the most important selective pressures in birds, particularly in altricial species, which are the species whose nestlings, being born unfeathered, blind and helpless, must be cared by parents.

The relationship between the position of a flea species in the networks and its functional originality was found to be consistently positive in all realms, independently of which originality index was used. ABSTRACT We investigated the relationships between a species’ network position (measured as the combined normalized degree, species strength, and ...

Use of alternate upland nesting habitat reduces brood parasitism in an endangered bird
The Least Bell’s Vireo ( Vireo bellii pusillus ) is a federally endangered songbird restricted to Southern California, USA, and Baja California, Mexico. Historically abundant, it suffered a catastrophic population decline during the twentieth century due

Offspring Defensive Investment Covaries With Brood Value in a Female Cobweb Spider
We performed a thorough field investigation on the web architectures of Campanicola campanulata to research its cobweb architecture variation under the condition of whether it carried egg sacs, in order to test the theory of its brood value. Our results demonstrate that retreat construction in female cobweb spiders is modulated by brood value.
