One way to measure the vitality of a profession is to look at the trend in its practitioners' real incomes. During the 10-year period 1986 through 1995, the average real net income of all independent dentists rose 30.7 percent, or 2.7 percent annually, after being adjusted for inflation using 1995 U.S. dollars.

• A crop farm has a one-time, irrevocable opportunity to elect either Price Loss Coverage (PLC) or county Agricultural Risk Coverage (ARC) on a crop by crop basis.
