When and why to give shorebirds a head start
Abstract Headstarting is a translocation technique involving the hatching or rearing of wild eggs or young in captivity and the release of those individuals back to the wild at or before independence. It has been trialed as a conservation intervention for shorebirds over recent decades to improve the population trend of target populations by increasing

Abstract Modeling unsaturated water transport in porous media traditionally relies on the Richards equation (RE) with hydraulic conductivity formulations to consider only capillary liquid water flow. However, this simplification neglects thin water films adsorbed onto particle surfaces, which can contribute significantly to flow under medium to dry ...

Calibrating the wetting front pressure head of the Green and Ampt infiltration model
Abstract The Green–Ampt (GA) model is a classical analytical solution of the Richards equation used to predict soil water infiltration. Based on a modified form of Darcy's law, it assumes piston‐like flow with a constant pressure head at the soil surface and in the saturated zone, separated from the unsaturated region by a sharp wetting front.

Nonlocal and localized analyses of nonreactive solute transport in bounded randomly heterogeneous porous media: Theoretical framework [PDF]
Solute transport in randomly heterogeneous media is described by stochastic transport equations that are typically solved via Monte Carlo simulation. A promising alternative is to solve a corresponding system of statistical moment equations directly.

ABSTRACT Vocabulary knowledge is foundational to educational success, but significant gaps exist between students with reading disabilities or those from disadvantaged backgrounds and their peers. These gaps have cascading effects, as children with lower vocabulary knowledge are less likely to acquire new words through independent reading and are less ...

Nonlocal and localized analyses of conditional mean transient flow in bounded, randomly heterogeneous porous media [PDF]
We consider the numerical prediction of transient flow in bounded, randomly heterogeneous porous media driven by random sources, initial heads, and boundary conditions without resorting to Monte Carlo simulation.

Monitoring Groundwater Pumping Using Time‐Lapse Tomography From Ambient Seismic Noise
Abstract Management of water resources will be of critical importance as the effects of climate change accelerate. This implies the need to monitor water resources with high spatial and temporal resolution. One way to meet this need could be passive seismic methods using ambient seismic noise. In this study, we present a novel approach using time‐lapse

Optimal Bounds for Neuman Mean Using Arithmetic and Centroidal Means [PDF]
We present the best possible parameters α1,α2,β1,β2∈R and α3,β3∈(1/2,1) such that the double inequalities α1A(a,b)+(1-α1)C(a,b)0 with a≠b and give several sharp inequalities involving the hyperbolic and inverse hyperbolic functions. Here, N(a,b), A(a,b),

Abstract Specific yield (SY) is a key parameter in estimating groundwater storage change. Accurately predicting SY in unconfined aquifers remains challenging, as SY varies with groundwater‐level fluctuations and unsaturated‐zone moisture fluxes. This challenge is particularly evident in the North China Plain (NCP), which has experienced substantial ...

Presidential Extra‐Territorialization: How Presidents Go Abroad to Bypass Domestic Constraint
ABSTRACT This paper introduces the concept of presidential extra‐territorialization—the process whereby presidents act through or within a foreign jurisdiction in order to achieve a policy goal which implicates the rights commonly held by US citizens or residents.
