Phylogeny of a neural cell adhesion molecule

Developmental Biology, 1985
The phylogeny of adhesion among cells derived from neural tissue has been examined using a combination of functional and immunological analyses. The presence of the neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) was evaluated with respect to NCAM-specific antigenic determinants attached to a polypeptide chain with appropriate electrophoretic properties. By these

Intracellular Signaling by the Neural Cell Adhesion Molecule

Neurochemical Research, 2003
Cell adhesion molecules are known to play far more complex roles than mechanically attaching one cell to an adjacent cell or to components of the extracellular matrix. Thus, important roles for cell adhesion molecules in the regulation of intracellular signaling pathways have been revealed.

Neural Cell Adhesion Molecule of Taste Buds

Journal of Electron Microscopy, 1992
The distribution of the neural cell adhesion molecule (N-CAM) in the taste buds of adult and developing mice was studied by use of an immunocytochemical technique. In adult mice, nerve fibers and some elongated taste bud cells reacted with anti-N-CAM antibody.

Targeting the neural cell adhesion molecule in cancer

Cancer Letters, 2007
NCAM is a tumour associated antigen expressed on small cell lung cancer, neuroblastoma, rhabdomyosarkoma, brain tumours, multiple myelomas and acute myeloid leukaemia. Constant and strong expression of NCAM is a prerequisite for the development of antibody-based immunotherapies.

The neural cell adhesion molecule and synaptic plasticity

Journal of Neurobiology, 1995
AbstractHighly stereotyped patterns of neuronal connections are laid down during the development of the nervous system via a range of activity independent and activity dependent mechanisms. Whereas the coarse hard‐wiring of the nervous system appears to rely on molecular recognition events between the neuron, its pathway, and its target, the ...

Developmental biology of a neural cell adhesion molecule [PDF]

open access: possibleNature, 1984
A membrane glycoprotein isolated from embryonic brain has been shown to be a ligand in the formation of cell-cell bonds. The molecule, called neural cell adhesion molecule (N-CAM), participates in several aspects of neural development, including the formation of plexiform layers, neurite fasciculation and nerve-muscle interactions.
