A Collagen-Binding Mimetic of Neural Cell Adhesion Molecule [PDF]
A chimeric protein consisting of a cell-adhesive peptide derived from a neural cell adhesion molecule and a collagen-binding domain was synthesized using recombinant DNA technology. Here, we demonstrate that the chimeric protein binds to type I collagen and promotes the adhesion and neurite extension of hippocampus neurons.

Heterogeneity of Soluble Neural Cell Adhesion Molecule
Journal of Neurochemistry, 1989Abstract: Soluble neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) from rat brain neuronal cell culture media consists predominantly of a polypeptide of Mr∼ 115,000. Minor amounts of a polypeptide of Mr∼ 180,000 and two inconsistently appearing components of Mr 160,000 and 145,000 are also observed.

Cell Adhesion Molecules in Neural Histogenesis
Annual Review of Physiology, 1986Aside from evolutionary change itself, there are three main sources of variabil ity in neural networks: the somatic developmental sequence, which is responsi ble for network formation and neuroanatomy; the chemical and structural variation at synapses (particularly that related to neurotransmitters and chan nels); and the electrical variation that ...

Cell Adhesion Molecules in Neural Development (Part 1 of 2)
Developmental Neuroscience, 1989Adhesive mechanisms have been implicated in several morphogenetic processes during development. In the last decade several molecules mediating specific adhesion between cells and between cells and their environment have been characterized. Possible roles in morphogenesis have been established for some of these molecules.

The Mechanism of Binding of Neural Cell Adhesion Molecules
1984The experimental results reviewed in this paper strongly suggest that the molecular mechanism of N-CAM-mediated cell adhesion involves the direct interaction of N-CAM molecules on one cell with N-CAM molecules on a second cell. The rate of this aggregation has a high-order dependence on the local N-CAM concentration, and is inversely related to the ...

The role of neural cell adhesion molecules in plasticity and repair
Brain Research Reviews, 2001Repair and functional recovery after brain injury critically depends on structural and functional plasticity of preserved neuronal networks. A striking feature of brain structures where tissue reorganization and plasticity occur is a strong expression of the polysialylated neural cell adhesion molecule (PSA-NCAM).

The neural cell adhesion molecule.
Current opinion in drug discovery & development, 2009During the past year, the understanding of the structure and function of neural cell adhesion has advanced considerably. The three-dimensional structures of several of the individual modules of the neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) have been determined, as well as the structure of the complex between two identical fragments of the NCAM.

Neural GPI anchored cell adhesion molecules
Frontiers in Bioscience, 2003When first identified, neural cell adhesion molecules (neural CAMs) were thought to act simply by providing cell surfaces with differential adhesion properties. In the decades following the identification of the first neural CAMs, it has been realized that these proteins are actually involved in very complex processes such as axon guidance, neuronal ...

Expression of Neural Cell Adhesion Molecule in Pancreatic Cancer
Pancreas, 2001Neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) has been found to be a significant factor for survival in various solid tumors. In the present study, we examined the expression of NCAM in exocrine tumors of the pancreas by immunohistochemistry, using two monoclonal antibodies against NCAM and polysialic acid (MAB735).

Brain Plasticity and the Neural Cell Adhesion Molecule (NCAM)
1997NCAM is a member of the Ig superfamily that is highly expressed in the nervous system. NCAM mediates cell-cell adhesion and adhesion of cells to the extracellular matrix. In addition to influencing the adhesive behaviour of cells, NCAM binding triggers the activation of intracellular signalling pathways.
