An Invariance Principle for Maintaining the Operating Point of a Neuron

open access: yes, 2008
Sensory neurons adapt to changes in the natural statistics of their environments through processes such as gain control and firing threshold adjustment.

On the Transmission of Information through Sensory Neurons

open access: yesBiophysical Journal, 1970
Information about muscle length is transmitted to the cerebellum from muscle spindle receptors through the dorsal spinocerebellar tract (DSCT). The "transinformation" about muscle length in single DSCT fibers was calculated from steady-state spike trains by two different methods, assuming that the decoding mechanisms use a frequency code.

Optoelectronic Synaptic Devices Using Molecular Telluride Phase‐Change Inks for Three‐Factor Learning

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Optoelectronic synaptic devices based on solution‐processed molecular telluride GST‐225 phase‐change inks are demonstrated for three‐factor learning. A global optical signal broadcast through a silicon waveguide induces non‐volatile conductance updates exclusively in locally electrically flagged memristors.

Parallel synapses with transmission nonlinearities enhance neuronal classification capacity.

open access: yesPLoS Computational Biology
Cortical neurons often establish multiple synaptic contacts with the same postsynaptic neuron. To avoid functional redundancy of these parallel synapses, it is crucial that each synapse exhibits distinct computational properties.

Biocompatible Biphasic Iontronics Enable Neuron-Like Ionic Signal Transmission

open access: yesResearch
Biocompatible connections between external artificial devices and living organisms show promise for future neuroprosthetics and therapeutics. The study in Science by Zhao and colleagues introduces a cascade-heterogated biphasic gel (HBG) iontronic device,

Quantifying Subsurface Weak in‐Plane Magnetization of Mixed Phase BiFeO3 by Scanning Nitrogen Vacancy Magnetometry

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We use scanning nitrogen vacancy magnetometry to directly image the weak in‐plane magnetic moments in mixed phase BiFeO3 at the nanoscale and quantify the local magnetic moments to be 18.8±2.0 μB/nm2 in the rhombohedral‐like phase and 1.5±0.6 μB/nm2 in the well‐known non‐magnetic tetragonal‐like phase.

Median raphe glutamatergic neuron-mediated enhancement of GABAergic transmission and suppression of long-term potentiation in the hippocampus

open access: yesHeliyon
The ascending neuromodulatory pathway from the median raphe nucleus (MRN) extends widely throughout midline/para-midline regions and robustly innervates the hippocampus. This neuromodulatory pathway is believed to be critical for regulating emotional and

Purinergic Signaling in the Vertebrate Olfactory System

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular Neuroscience, 2019
Adenosine 5′-triphosphate (ATP) is an ubiquitous co-transmitter in the vertebrate brain. ATP itself, as well as its breakdown products ADP and adenosine are involved in synaptic transmission and plasticity, neuron-glia communication and neural ...

Peripheral and Central Mechanisms of Itch

open access: yesNeuron, 2018
Itch is a unique sensory experience that is encoded by genetically distinguishable neurons both in the peripheral nervous system (PNS) and central nervous system (CNS) to elicit a characteristic behavioral response (scratching).
