Gabaergic transmission by POA neurons to orexin neurons

Sleep Medicine, 2013
Introduction Populations of neurons in the hypothalamic preoptic area (POA) fire rapidly during sleep, exhibiting sleep/waking state-dependent firing patterns that are the reciprocal of those observed in the arousal system. The majority of these preoptic_gsleep-active_h neurons contain the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA. These neurons are thought to

Synaptic transmission in rat cardiac neurones

Journal of the Autonomic Nervous System, 1992
Intracellular recordings of spontaneous synaptic activity and synaptic responses to fibre tract stimulation were taken from neurones of ganglia isolated from the left atrium and interatrial septum of the rat. In six out of 57 neurones studied, spontaneous fast excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) were recorded.

Quantal transmission: not just for neurons

Trends in Neurosciences, 2005
Glia have moved into the spotlight as participants in synaptic signaling. Recent work by Bergles and colleagues extends this active role by showing that oligodendrocyte precursors cells (OPCs) in the hippocampus receive functional glutamatergic and GABAergic synapses.

Information transmission with renewal neurons

Neurocomputing, 2001
Abstract Information theory is becoming increasingly important as a tool in neuroscience, both in theoretical and experimental studies. Models to which information theory has been applied generally use an extremely simplified description of the noise.

Reliability and information transmission in spiking neurons

Trends in Neurosciences, 1992
Spiking neurons encode continuous, time-varying signals in sequences of identical action potentials. Relatively simple algorithms allow one to 'decode' this neural representation of sensory data to estimate the input signals. Decoding experiments provide a quantitative characterization of information transmission and computational reliability under ...

Chemical Coding of Neurons and Plurichemical Transmission

Annual Review of Pharmacology and Toxicology, 1989
Two unexpected facts about neurons have been established in recent years: neurons contain and can release a large variety of substances that are capable of influencing target cells; and it is common for individual neurons to contain several such substances.

Modulation of Neuronal Information Transmission

1992
In light of the myriad details presented thus far relative to the molecular structure of the synaptic membrane, the vesicles, the synaptic transmitters (neurotransmitters, neuropeptides), and their neuroreceptors, one might well conclude that the relatively strict sequencing of events in the transmission process of electrical information signals from ...

Synaptic Transmission in the Sensory Relay Neurons of the Thalamus

1969
Publisher Summary This chapter emphasizes the characteristic stepwise summation of excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) observed during the monosynaptic activation of thalamocortical relay (TCR) neurons by a specific sensory input. The special synaptic morphology of the thalamocortical relay (TCR) neurons facilitates the neurophysiological ...

Neuronal transmission mechanisms

2018
It was attempted to stimulate the salivary nerves. This resulted in structural changes within peripheral cells and type A axons. When the salivary nerves were cut several degenerating axon profiles could be identified in association with the gland cells. This was not observed when the stomatogastric nerve was cut.
