Neuropathic pain is a distressing, poorly understood and under-treated condition. In this review we seek to examine the definition and classification of neuropathic pain, summarize clinically important underlying mechanisms, outline current management strategies and look at future directions for research and therapy.

Understanding Neuropathic Pain
CNS Spectrums, 2005AbstractNeuropathic pain is defined as a chronic pain condition that occurs or persists after a primary lesion or dysfunction of the peripheral or central nervous system. Traumatic injury of peripheral nerves also increases the excitability of nociceptors in and around nerve trunks and involves components released from nerve terminals (neurogenic ...

Outflow Obstruction in Neuropathic Bladder Dysfunction: The Neuropathic Urethra
British Journal of Urology, 1978Summary— Urethral pressure profiles were recorded in a series of patients with traumatic lesions of the spinal cord producing vesico‐urethral dysfunction. Patients were classified into groups depending upon the relationship of the lesion to the sympathetic outflow to the bladder and urethra from the spinal cord.

The present study explores the role of simvastatin in vincristine-induced neuropathic pain, which was induced by administering vincristine (100 µg/kg i.p.) for 10 days (two 5 day cycles with 2 days pause). Pain was assessed by determining mechanical hyperalgesia, mechanical dynamic allodynia, heat hyperalgesia and cold allodynia.

Neuropathic pain is a clinical entity that presents unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. This chapter addresses the classification, epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of neuropathic pain syndrome. Neuropathic pain can be distinguished from nociceptive pain based on clinical signs and symptoms.

Epidemiology of Neuropathic Pain
Pain Management, 2010Epidemiology is an essential clinical tool in designing and evaluating management and prevention strategies, and is particularly relevant to neuropathic pain. Despite its relevance to neuropathic pain however, there is a paucity of accurate information on its prevalence, distribution and determinants, for several reasons.

Neuropathic pain of the orofacial region can cause much distress in individuals presenting with this condition. It may be easily mistaken for dental pain, and hence many individuals may undergo unnecessary dental work. Knowledge of the types of neuropathic orofacial pain may assist in timely diagnosis and improvement of a patient's quality of life.
