Perturbing whole‐brain models of brain hierarchy: An application for depression following pharmacological treatment

open access: yesAnnals of the New York Academy of Sciences, EarlyView.
We apply whole‐brain models of brain hierarchy based on a thermodynamics of mind framework to investigate state transitions in depression. Dynamic sensitivity analysis explores how psilocybin and escitalopram affect susceptibility and drivability to healthier states.

Quality of life in older adults is enhanced by piano practice: Results from a randomized controlled trial

open access: yesAnnals of the New York Academy of Sciences, EarlyView.
In this randomized controlled trial, 156 older participants were assigned to either piano practice or music listening groups for 12 months. Quality of life was assessed at 0, 6, 12, 18, and ∼48 months. We showed that practicing piano positively impacted psychological, physical, and environmental quality of life, which was associated with bilateral ...

Experienced meditators show greater forward traveling cortical alpha wave strengths

open access: yesAnnals of the New York Academy of Sciences, EarlyView.
Evidence shows mindfulness meditation improves attention and mental health. Neural mechanisms underlying these effects are not fully understood. Cortical travelling waves index inhibitory functions for top‐down expectations (backward waves travelling from frontal to posterior regions) or to enhance sensory processing (forward waves).

Subcortical gray matter aging and attentional control in amateur musicians and nonmusicians

open access: yesAnnals of the New York Academy of Sciences, EarlyView.
108 adults aged 20 to 88 years were recruited, including 34 singers, 37 instrumentalists, and 37 active nonmusicians. Participants completed an auditory selective attention task and a visual inhibition task. MRI images were acquired to examine the relationship between subcortical volumes and attention in these groups.
