The target used to be limited to the extracranial carotid artery but is now extended to the intracranial arteries. Carotid artery ultrasound can evaluate not only the degree of stenosis but also the vulnerability of plaque.

The Journal of the Louisiana State Medical Society : official organ of the Louisiana State Medical Society, 1997The role of ultrasound in the diagnosis of cerebrovascular disease is reviewed and is compared with other existing vascular imaging modalities. The present and future role of neurosonology is discussed including transcranial Doppler and carotid Doppler duplex ultrasound.
