The merits of neutral theory

open access: yesTrends in Ecology & Evolution, 2006
Hubbell's neutral theory of biodiversity has challenged the classic niche-based view of ecological community structure. Although there have been many attempts to falsify Hubbell's theory, we argue that falsification should not lead to rejection, because there is more to the theory than neutrality alone.

The case for ecological neutral theory [PDF]

open access: yesTrends in Ecology & Evolution, 2012
Ecological neutral theory has elicited strong opinions in recent years. Here, we review these opinions and strip away some unfortunate problems with semantics to reveal three major underlying questions. Only one of these relates to neutral theory and the importance of ecological drift, whereas the others involve the link between pattern and process ...

Neutrality Versus Materiality: A Thermodynamic Theory of Neutral Surfaces [PDF]

open access: yesFluids, 2016
In this paper, a theory for constructing quasi-neutral density variables γ directly in thermodynamic space is formulated, which is based on minimising the absolute value of a purely thermodynamic quantity J n .

Neutral theory of cooperative dynamics. [PDF]

open access: yesProc Natl Acad Sci U S A
Mutualistic interactions are widespread in nature, from plant communities and microbiomes to human organizations. Along with competition for resources, cooperative interactions shape biodiversity and contribute to the robustness of complex ecosystems. We present a stochastic neutral theory of cooperator species.

Neutral Theory and Phenotypic Evolution. [PDF]

open access: yesMol Biol Evol, 2018
Although the neutral theory of molecular evolution was proposed to explain DNA and protein sequence evolution, in principle it could also explain phenotypic evolution. Nevertheless, overall, phenotypes should be less likely than genotypes to evolve neutrally.

Almost surely asymptotic stability of neutral stochastic differential delay equations with Markovian switching [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The main aim of this paper is to discuss the almost surely asymptotic stability of the neutral stochastic differential delay equations (NSDDEs) with Markovian switching.

Development of Neutral and Nearly Neutral Theories [PDF]

open access: yesTheoretical Population Biology, 1996
A short history of the major features of neutral theories of molecular evolution is presented. Emphasis is placed on the nearly neutral theory, as this version of the neutral theory has explained the widest range of phenomena. The shift of interest from protein to DNA evolution is chronicled, leading to the modern view that silent and replacement ...

Delay-dependent exponential stability of neutral stochastic delay systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
This paper studies stability of neutral stochastic delay systems by linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach. Delay dependent criterion for exponential stability is presented and numerical examples are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed

Turnover in Life-Strategies Recapitulates Marine Microbial Succession Colonizing Model Particles

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2022
Particulate organic matter (POM) in the ocean sustains diverse communities of bacteria that mediate the remineralization of organic complex matter. However, the variability of these particles and of the environmental conditions surrounding them present a

Interfacial Microstructure of Neutral and Charged Polymer Brushes: A Density Functional Theory Study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
Polymer density functional theory (PDFT) is a computationally efficient and popular statistical mechanics theory of complex fluids for capturing the interfacial microstructure of grafted polymer brushes (PBs).
