Constraining neutron-star matter with microscopic and macroscopic collisions [PDF]

open access: yesNature, 2021
Interpreting high-energy, astrophysical phenomena, such as supernova explosions or neutron-star collisions, requires a robust understanding of matter at supranuclear densities.

GW170817: Measurements of Neutron Star Radii and Equation of State. [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2018
On 17 August 2017, the LIGO and Virgo observatories made the first direct detection of gravitational waves from the coalescence of a neutron star binary system.

CUBIC NEUTRONS [PDF]

open access: yesModern Physics Letters A, 2012
The neutron is largely spherical and incompressible in atomic nuclei. These two properties are however challenged in the extreme pressure environment of a neutron star. Our variational computation within the Cornell model of Coulomb gauge QCD shows that the neutron (and also the Δ3/2 baryon) can adopt cubic symmetry at an energy cost of about 150 MeV.

Implications of PREX-2 on the Equation of State of Neutron-Rich Matter.

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2021
Laboratory experiments sensitive to the equation of state of neutron rich matter in the vicinity of nuclear saturation density provide the first rung in a "density ladder" that connects terrestrial experiments to astronomical observations.

Neutron-neutron and neutron-photon correlations withFREYA [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2017
For many years, the state of the art for modeling fission in radiation transport codes has involved sampling from average distributions. However, in a true fission event, the energies, momenta and multiplicities of emitted particles are correlated. The FREYA (Fission Reaction Event Yield Algorithm) code generates complete fission events. Event-by-event

Search for Neutron-to-Hidden-Neutron Oscillations in an Ultracold Neutron Beam

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2023
Models that postulate the existence of hidden sectors address contemporary questions, such as the source of baryogenesis and the nature of dark matter. Among the possible mixing processes, neutron-to-hidden-neutron oscillations have been repeatedly tested with ultra-cold neutron storage and passing-through-wall experiments in the range of small ($δm<

Evidence for quark-matter cores in massive neutron stars [PDF]

open access: yesNature Physics, 2019
The theory governing the strong nuclear force—quantum chromodynamics—predicts that at sufficiently high energy densities, hadronic nuclear matter undergoes a deconfinement transition to a new phase of quarks and gluons1.

Observation of Gravitational Waves from the Coalescence of a 2.5–4.5 M ⊙ Compact Object and a Neutron Star [PDF]

open access: yesAstrophysical Journal Letters
We report the observation of a coalescing compact binary with component masses 2.5–4.5 M ⊙ and 1.2–2.0 M ⊙ (all measurements quoted at the 90% credible level).

Multimessenger constraints on the neutron-star equation of state and the Hubble constant

open access: yesScience, 2020
A combined multimessenger analysis Neutron stars are stellar remnants with densities greater than that of an atomic nucleus. The properties of matter under such extreme conditions are poorly understood and inaccessible to terrestrial laboratories ...
