Neutron detectors and spectrometers

SPIE Proceedings, 1997
Methods for detecting neutrons, thermal to high energy, and for determining neutron spectra are reviewed, with emphasis on work published in the years 1992 to 1996.

A detector for neutron imaging

2003 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium. Conference Record (IEEE Cat. No.03CH37515), 2003
A bright neutron source such as the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) places extreme requirements on detectors including excellent 2-D spatial imaging and high dynamic range. Present imaging detectors have either shown position resolutions that are less than acceptable or they exhibit excessive paralyzing dead times due to the brightness of the source ...

Gas Detectors for Neutrons

Journal of Neutron Research, 1996
The principles involved in gas detectors for neutrons and the techniques for position encoding in such detectors are reviewed. This forms the basis for a discussion of the limitations on gas detector position resolution and maximum data rates, and of the aging effects in such detectors. Current capabilities and possible areas for improvement are noted.

Semiconductor neutron detectors

SPIE Proceedings, 2016
Lithium Indium Selenide (LiInSe2) has been under development in RMD Inc. and Fisk University for room temperature thermal neutron detection due to a number of promising properties. The recent advances of the crystal growth, material processing, and detector fabrication technologies allowed us to fabricate large detectors with 100 mm2 active area.

Boron Trifluoride Neutron Detector for Low Neutron Intensities

Review of Scientific Instruments, 1947
A sensitive boron trifluoride ionization chamber for the detection of weak neutron sources is described. Its efficiency for Ra-Be neutrons is about 2 percent with a background of 15 c/min.

Miniature Neutron Detector

IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science, 1969
A miniature neutron detector has been designed to verify the correct operation of a pulsed 14-MeV neutron generator. The detector consists essentially of the following components: a plastic scintillator which converts neutron energy to light; a photomultiplier tube which collects light and converts it into an amplified electrical signal; a power supply

The black neutron detector

Nuclear Instruments and Methods, 1973
Abstract A fast time-response detector for absolute neutron flux measurements was designed. The detector consists of a medium size liquid scintillator tank with an entrance channel for a collimated neutron beam. The primary neutron energy is transformed by successive collisions into proton and carbon recoils resulting in a light flash which is ...

Neutron Detectors for Imaging

2009
This chapter examines neutron detection methods for imaging. The first section reviews neutron capture converters, which form the basis for thermal neutron detection, and the following sections examine various detector systems with an emphasis on imaging applications and the choices available for imaging at time-of-flight facilities.

A Fast Neutron Detector

Review of Scientific Instruments, 1952
A fast neutron detector with an efficiency of a few percent and the capability of detecting neutrons in the presence of intense gamma-ray backgrounds has been developed. The detector consists of a ZnS and Lucite molded cylinder used in conjunction with a 5819 photomultiplier tube.
