Development of compact neutron sources [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2020
Many small research reactors, neutron sources built in the 1950s and 1960s are being shut down. The activities that these supported have therefore ended, which motivates their replacements with new facilities.

Neutron applications developing at compact accelerator-driven neutron sources

open access: yesAAPPS Bulletin, 2021
Neutrons have been used in a wide field of applications by using various neutron sources. Material science is one of the widest research fields. The activity is supported by nuclear research reactors and high-intensity spallation neutron sources based on

Enhanced laser-driven hadron sources with nanostructured double-layer targets

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2020
Laser-driven ion sources are approaching the requirements for several applications in materials and nuclear science. Relying on compact, table-top, femtosecond laser systems is pivotal to enable most of these applications. However, the moderate intensity

A femtosecond neutron source [PDF]

open access: yesApplied Physics B, 2006
The possibility to use the ultrashort ion bunches produced by circularly polarized laser pulses to drive a source of fusion neutrons with sub-optical cycle duration is discussed. A two-side irradiation of a thin foil deuterated target produces two countermoving ion bunches, whose collision leads to an ultrashort neutron burst.

Neutron Calibration Sources in the Daya Bay Experiment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
We describe the design and construction of the low rate neutron calibration sources used in the Daya Bay Reactor Anti-neutrino Experiment. Such sources are free of correlated gamma-neutron emission, which is essential in minimizing induced background in ...

Neutron Imaging at Compact Accelerator-Driven Neutron Sources in Japan

open access: yesJournal of Imaging, 2018
Neutron imaging has been recognized to be very useful to investigate inside of materials and products that cannot be seen by X-ray. New imaging methods using the pulsed structure of neutron sources based on accelerators has been developed also at compact

Development of Prototype Simplified Neutron Scatter Camera for Nuclear Safeguards Applications [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2021
Neutron scatter cameras are a type of directional neutron detectors that rely on multiple neutron scatters to generate images that can reveal the direction and distribution of neutron sources.
