This paper describes the latest developments in neutron sources developed for fast neutron therapy. Two approaches have been taken using cyclotrons and D-T generators. For cyclotrons the proton on beryllium reaction is now preferred since smaller cyclotrons for a given neutron penetration can be used.

Pulsed Neutron Source

Review of Scientific Instruments, 1955
A pulsed neutron source is described which gives 106 neutrons in a burst which is 2×10−8 second wide. The plasma of an ion pump is used as the source of deuterium ions which are accelerated to 200 kv before striking a deuterium target, where the D(d,n)He3 reaction produces 2 to 3 Mev neutrons.
