Interplay between Lithium Intercalation and Plating during Fast Charging of Lithium‐Ion Batteries Investigated by Operando NMR Spectroscopy

open access: yesBatteries &Supercaps, EarlyView.
Lithium plating is investigated using operando nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and a three‐electrode design. The onset of plating occurs at a negative potential below −100 mV, while NMR spectra offer insights on the competition between graphite lithiation, plating, and re‐intercalation during charging.

Ag‐Embedded Carbon Nanotube Bucky Papers for Lithium Metal Full Batteries

open access: yesBatteries &Supercaps, EarlyView.
The lithiophilic 3D carbon host is fabricated with multi‐walled carbon nanotubes and silver nitrate as an Ag precursor for the Li metal anode, which provides a conductive pathway and site for high Li affinity. Owing to lowered Li nucleation overpotential and uniform Li deposition, the Li@Ag/MCBP–10 with variable cathode exhibits enhanced cycle ...

A Cellular Automation for Real‐Time Electrolyte Wetting Simulation in Multilayer Lithium‐Ion Cells: From Lab Data to Full‐Scale Formats

open access: yesBatteries &Supercaps, EarlyView.
A cellular automaton model is introduced for simulating electrolyte wetting in porous battery composites. The model offers high flexibility, near real‐time runtimes, and strong agreement with experimental data. Validated on individual and multilayer configurations, the model enables fast, accurate wetting prediction for pouch, and cylindrical cell ...

In‐Depth Analysis of the Origin of Enhanced Ionic Conductivity of Halide‐Based Solid‐State Electrolyte by Anion Site Substitution

open access: yesBatteries &Supercaps, EarlyView.
The effect of sulfur doping on Li2ZrCl6 is systematically investigated. The formation of biphasic mixtures is confirmed by neutron and X‐ray diffraction studies. The presence of dual anion doping shows improved ionic conductivity of 0.64 mS cm−1. The transition from 1D to 2D pathway (confirmed by density functional theory (DFT)) is beneficial in ...

Understanding the Temperature–Induced Decomposition of Commercial Nickel–Cobalt–Aluminum Oxide (LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2) Electrodes

open access: yesBatteries &Supercaps, EarlyView.
High‐resolution X‐ray diffraction and thermal analysis show the structural degradation of the NCA cathode from a layered structure over a spinel phase toward the rock salt structure within a temperature range from 180 to 1000 K. This study addresses the thermal degradation and structural stability of the NCA (nickel–cobalt–aluminum oxide) cathode ...

Operando Scanning SAXS/WAXS Cell Design for Multiscale Analysis of All‐Solid‐State Battery Systems

open access: yesBatteries &Supercaps, EarlyView.
A novel cell enables operando scanning small‐ and wide‐angle X‐ray scattering across an all‐solid‐state lithium‐sulfur cell. Spatially resolved structural evolution is being tracked, revealing heterogeneous cathode reactions, confined sulfur‐to‐sulfide conversion in nanopores, and an anisotropic lithiation mechanism in the lithium‐indium anode ...
