Influence of TRISO Fuel Particle Arrangements on Pebble Neutronics and Isotopic Evolution

open access: yesJournal of Nuclear Engineering
Pebble Bed Reactors (PBRs) represent a new generation of nuclear reactors. However, modeling TRi-structural ISOtropic (TRISO) fuel particles employed in PBRs presents a unique challenge in comparison to most conventional reactor designs. Rapid generation

Uncovering the Lipid Interface in Neurotransmission: Single Molecule Measurements of Neurotransmitters Interacting with Membranes Reveal Species Dependent Membrane Binding

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Using single‐molecule whispering gallery mode sensors, neurotransmitter‐specific membrane binding signatures are measured that reveal intrinsically distinct interaction kinetics and orientations on a lipid membrane. Abstract Neurotransmitters (NTs) have traditionally been understood to act via aqueous‐phase receptor binding, but growing evidence ...

Mitigating the Rock‐Salt Phase Transformation in Disordered LNMO Through Synergetic Solid‐State AlF3/LiF Modifications

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The transition between the spinel and rock‐salt phases induces irreversible structural changes in disordered LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4, thereby preventing it from fully releasing its electrochemical capacity during charge/discharge cycling. Abstract High‐voltage disordered spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 is a promising cathode material for high power density in lithium‐ion

A novel discontinuous-Galerkin deterministic neutronics model for fusion applications: development and benchmarking

open access: yesNuclear Fusion
Neutron interactions in a fusion power plant play a pivotal role in determining critical design parameters such as coil-plasma distance and breeding blanket composition. Fast predictive neutronic capabilities are therefore crucial for an efficient design

Neutronics benchmark calculations of the NuScale-like SMR core using SCALE/KENO-VI

open access: yesNuclear Engineering and Technology
A neutronics benchmark for a NuScale-like core has been proposed under the Euratom McSAFER project using Monte Carlo solutions from Serpent 2 (v2.2) and the nuclear data library ENDF/B-VII.1.

Pellet bed reactor for nuclear propelled vehicles: Part 1: Reactor technology [PDF]

open access: yes
The pellet bed reactor (PBR) for nuclear propelled vehicles is briefly discussed. Much of the information is given in viewgraph form. Viewgraphs include information on the layout for a Mars mission using a PBR nuclear thermal rocket, the rocket reactor ...

Hidden Charge‐Order in the Mixed‐Valent K0.75Li2Cr6O12 High‐Pressure Oxide

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
K0.75Li2Cr6O12 is one of the few mixed valent chromium oxides. It shows a single angle spiral magnetic structure with a k = [1/3 1/3 ¼] propagation vector. Density functional theory reveals a hidden charge order that is necessary to stabilize the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state.

Displacive In‐Plane Ferroelectricity with Domain‐Specific Curie Temperature in Van der Waals Semiconductors

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Temperature‐dependent electron diffraction on tin monochalcogenides demonstrates a gradual displacive transformation between ferroelectric and paraelectric phases with significant variability in lattice constants and Curie temperature (TC). Periodic variations exist even between domains in individual crystals, implying a domain‐specific Curie ...
