Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

Is there Progress? An Overview of Select Biomarker Candidates for Major Depressive Disorder

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychiatry, 2016
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) contributes to a significant worldwide disease burden, expected to be second only to heart disease by 2050. However, accurate diagnosis has been a historical weakness in clinical psychiatry.

Salmonella lipopolysaccharide‐containing supported lipid bilayers as platforms to study bacteriophage interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

Excited-State Dynamics of the Thiopurine Prodrug 6-Thioguanine: Can N9-Glycosylation Affect Its Phototoxic Activity?

open access: yesMolecules, 2017
6-Thioguanine, an immunosuppressant and anticancer prodrug, has been shown to induce DNA damage and cell death following exposure to UVA radiation. Its metabolite, 6-thioguanosine, plays a major role in the prodrug’s overall photoreactivity.

Microbiome−host proteostasis crosstalk—An emerging perspective on mechanisms and interventions toward healthy longevity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.

Over Two Years of Sustained Remission With Olaparib Monotherapy in Stage IV Non‐Small Cell Lung Cancer With ATM Mutation: A Case Report

open access: yesCancer Reports
Background Ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM) mutations represent the most common homologous recombination deficiency (HRD) mutation in non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, their therapeutic role in NSCLC has not been established.

A NEW CLOTHING CASE FOR THE SOLDIER. [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the American Medical Association, 1886
The science of medicine has for its purpose not only the cure of disease, but, infinitely more important, the prevention of sickness and of suffering. Students of the medical profession—and, as long as we are faithful to our calling, we who are known as medical doctors must also be students—investigate matters pertaining to prevention and cure in every

A NEW OPHTHALMIC VISITING CASE. [PDF]

open access: yesJAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1903
This little visiting case which I present to the profession and which is herein portrayed is of especial interest to oculists; it can, of course, be used by the physician in general work in connection with his ophthalmic cases. As will be seen by the cut, it contains all the essentials commonly used in the treatment of eye cases, each dropper being ...

From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...
