Inbreeding and Endangered Species Management: Is New Zealand Out of Step with the Rest of the World?
Conservation Biology, 2006Abstract: There is growing evidence that inbreeding can negatively affect small, isolated populations. This contrasts with the perception in New Zealand, where it has been claimed that native birds are less affected by inbreeding depression than threatened species from continental regions.

A new breeding system using gynogenesis and sex-reversal for fast inbreeding in carp
Theoretical and Applied Genetics, 1984A new breeding technique is demonstrated using gynogenesis and sex-reversal. The essence of this method is an adequate alternation of gynogenesis and sibmating with a maximal increase in the coefficient of inbreeding. The rate of this increase considerably exceeds that characteristic of sibmating.

In the summer of 2016, we observed a pair of Charadrius melodus (Piping Plover) successfully hatch 2 nests at Fire Island National Seashore and fledge chicks from both broods. Double brooding is rare among Piping Plovers, and fledging chicks from both broods is rarer still.

The Functional Genomics of Inbreeding Depression: A New Approach to an Old Problem
BioScience, 2010The fitness consequences of inbreeding have attracted the attention of biologists since the time its harmful effects were first recognized by Charles Darwin. Although inbreeding depression has been a central theme in biological research for over a century, little is known about its underlying molecular basis.

Abstract: Although the negative effects of close inbreeding in captive populations are well known, inbreeding in small, free‐ranging populations is less well understood. During the mid‐1980s, small numbers of the flightless Takahe ( Porphyrio hochstetteri ) were ...

Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella, the three main grape varieties cultivated in Verona, are characterized by a high phenotypic homogeneity. Self-pollination has been used to give expression to the intrinsic variability present in the genome of these varieties.

A computer program was written for the calculation of inbreeding coefficients in pedigrees. Trees and recursivity allow a very efficient codification into LISP or PROLOG.

HOMO, 2001
The purpose of this paper is to introduce a new method of estimating inbreeding in large, relatively isolated, populations over historic times, to demonstrate its application, and indicate some of its limitations and future developments. The method is based on the "paradox" of genealogy, and requires only that the variation of the population size be ...

An interspecific hybrid between Lycopersicon esculentum (♀) and L. peruvianum has been raised by embryo rescue in vitro and used to confirm the presence of a new S-allelic specificity in its inbred L. peruvianum parent, a plant derived by enforced bud self-pollination of a self-incompatible clone with the genotype S 1 S 2.

Academic inbreeding: new estimates
By analyzing nearly 8,000 recruitments for assistant professor positions in France between 2017 and 2024, Olivier Godechot, Rachel Issiakou, Yann Renisio, and Adrien Rougier revisit the long-standing and controversial issue of academic inbreeding.Godechot, Olivier +3 more
