Genetic heterogeneity of DRw4 in the old order amish and two new HLA-D specificities

Human Immunology, 1980
Seven Old Order Amish families were D and DR typed using the Eighth International Workshop HTC and Dr antisera. Four different DR4 haplotypes were identified in five families, two of which were negative for Dw4 as well as all other known HLA-D alleles.

Familial spastic paraplegia with distal muscle wasting in the Old Order Amish; atypical Troyer syndrome or “new” syndrome*

Clinical Genetics, 1976
The Troyer syndrome was found by Cross & McKusick (1967) in 20 members of 12 Old Order Amish families in Holmes County, Ohio; it is a form of hereditary spastic paraplegia combined with distal muscle wasting, i.e. signs of involvement of lower motor neurons. The condition usually begins at 1 to 2 years and progresses at variable rates.

Analysis of new D4 dopamine receptor (DRD4) coding region variants and TH microsatellite in the Old Order Amish family (OOA110)

Psychiatric Genetics, 1994
The candidate genes tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and the dopamine D4 receptor gene (DRD4) are both located in the 11p15.5 region, thus creating strong interest in this region for genetic studies of bipolar affective disorder. It is conceivable that disregulation of the dopamine system could arise from genetic defects in DRD4 or TH, which in turn may lead ...

Amish Femininity: New Lessons from the Old Order

Journal of the Motherhood Initiative for Research and Community Involvement, 2015

I ask how mainstream norms of femininity, particularly those that celebratepassivity and weakness, manifest in a woman’s particular experience of childbirth. As a counterpoint, I examine how gender norms associated with Amish femininityshape Amish women’s ...

Genome-wide and fine-mapping linkage studies of type 2 diabetes and glucose traits in the Old Order Amish: evidence for a new diabetes locus on chromosome 14q11 and confirmation of a locus on chromosome 1q21-q24.

Diabetes, 2003
We conducted a genome scan using a 10-cM map to search for genes linked to type 2 diabetes in 691 individuals from a founder population, the Old Order Amish. We then saturated two regions on chromosomes 1 and 14 showing promising linkage signals with additional markers to produce a approximately 2-cM map for fine mapping.
