Fatal Infection of a Pet Monkey with Human herpesvirus 1

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2002
Concerns have been raised about pet monkeys as a potential threat to humans. We report the opposite situation, a danger to pets that arises from humans.

Divergent evolution and purifying selection of the H (FUT1) gene in New World monkeys (Primates, Platyrrhini)

open access: yesGenetics and Molecular Biology, 2004
In the present study, the coding region of the H gene was sequenced and analyzed in fourteen genera of New World primates (Alouatta, Aotus, Ateles, Brachyteles, Cacajao, Callicebus, Callithrix, Cebus, Chiropotes, Lagothrix, Leontopithecus, Pithecia ...

Face selective patches in marmoset frontal cortex

open access: yesNature Communications, 2020
In Old World primates, socially relevant face processing is accomplished via a distributed functional network including specialized patches in the frontal cortex.

Scanning electron microscopic study of the tongue in golden-headed lion tamarins, Leontopithecus chrysomelas (Callithrichidae: Primates)

open access: yesZoologia (Curitiba), 2009
Leontopithecus is the largest genus of Callithrichidae, occupying isolated remnants of the Atlantic Forest in Brazil. The objective of this study was to investigate the ultrastructure of the dorsum of the tongue of golden-headed lion tamarins. Tongues of

Social interactions through the eyes of macaques and humans [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Group-living primates frequently interact with each other to maintain social bonds as well as to compete for valuable resources. Observing such social interactions between group members provides individuals with essential information (e.g.

A single mutation in the ACTR8 gene associated with lineage-specific expression in primates

open access: yesBMC Evolutionary Biology, 2020
Background Alternative splicing (AS) generates various transcripts from a single gene and thus plays a significant role in transcriptomic diversity and proteomic complexity.

Long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis) can use simple heuristics but fail at drawing statistical inferences from populations to samples [PDF]

open access: yesRoyal Society Open Science, 2018
Human infants, apes and capuchin monkeys engage in intuitive statistics: they generate predictions from populations of objects to samples based on proportional information. This suggests that statistical reasoning might depend on some core knowledge that

Vaccine innovation, translational research and the management of knowledge accumulation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
What does it take to translate research into socially beneficial technologies like vaccines? Current policy that focuses on expanding research or strengthening incentives overlooks how the supply and demand of innovation is mediated by problem-solving ...

Ocular dominance columns in New World monkeys [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Neuroscience, 1996
Squirrel monkeys normally lack ocular dominance columns in V1. This study shows that squirrel monkeys can exhibit clear ocular dominance columns if they are made strabismic within a few weeks of birth. Columns were seen only in layer 4C beta and were coarser than the overlying blob pattern in the same animal.
