Landslide hazard assessment of the fault zone considering the fault effect: a case study of the Lixian–Luojiabu fault zone in Gansu Province (China)

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science
The earthquake landslide hazard assessment method is mainly based on the traditional Newmark model. However, when the landslide hazard assessment is carried out along the fault zone, the calculated results are often different from the actual situation ...

Sherman traps, bucket cameras, eDNA—oh, my: A comparative study of small mammal monitoring methods

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, EarlyView.
Comparison of Sherman live trapping, bucket camera traps, and airborne environmental DNA (eDNA) for assessing small mammal communities in restored prairies. Bucket cameras detected the highest species richness, live trapping provided the most precise species identifications, and airborne eDNA detected unique taxa.

Inconsistent Stability of Newmark's Method in Structural Dynamics Applications [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Computational and Nonlinear Dynamics, 2015
The stability of numerical time integrators, and of the physical systems to which they are applied, are normally studied independently. This conceals a very interesting phenomenon, here termed inconsistent stability, wherein a numerical time marching scheme predicts a stable response about an equilibrium configuration that is, in fact, unstable.

Numerical calculating linear vibrations of third order systems involving fractional operators

open access: yesVietnam Journal of Mechanics, 2012
This paper presents a numerical method for dynamic calculation of third order systems involving fractional operators. Using the Liouville-Rieman's definition of fractional derivatives, a numerical algorithm is developed on base of the well-known Newmark

The Influence of Vertical Seismic Acceleration on the Triggering of Landslides Constrained by Bedding Faults under an Inertial Frame Reference: The Case of the Daguangbao (DGB) Landslide

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2023
The Daguangbao (DGB) landslide was the largest landslide that was triggered by the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake with a magnitude of Ms8.0. The sliding surface of this landslide was constrained on a bedding fault 400 m below the ground surface.

Secularism, Gender and Masculinity in Nineteenth‐Century Cremation in Europe and the USA

open access: yesGender &History, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This essay explores, from transnational perspectives, the early history of modern cremation, which developed in the long nineteenth century with secularist connotations. I argue that the beginnings of modern cremation were shaped by bourgeois men who claimed certain identifiers for themselves in a gendering and Othering way.

Wildebeest movement responses to electric conservation fencing in the African Savannah ecosystem

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, EarlyView.
These findings provide GPS‐based empirical evidence of how a newly constructed electric conservation fence alters migratory wildebeests, and show that effects are context‐dependent across habitat type, time of day, and distance to the boundary. While such fences can reduce human–wildlife conflict and support conservation goals, they must be carefully ...

Risk Identification of Seismic Landslides by Joint Newmark and RockFall Analyst Models: A Case Study of Roads Affected by the Jiuzhaigou Earthquake

open access: yesInternational Journal of Disaster Risk Science, 2018
Geological disasters are a great threat to people’s lives and property. At present, it is difficult to evaluate quantitatively the cascading effects of regional geological disasters, and the development of new methods for such evaluation is much needed ...

Genetic, phenotypic, and ecological differentiation indicate a new cryptic and threatened species in the orchid genus Epidendrum from Alcatrazes Island, southeastern Brazil

open access: yesJournal of Systematics and Evolution, EarlyView.
Epidendrum insularis occurs on the remote Alcatrazes Island in the southeastern Brazilian coast. The description of this new cryptic species was only possible by the joint use of molecular markers, reproductive experiments, flower morphometry, functional traits, and community analysis.

Frequency-Dependent FDTD Algorithm Using Newmark’s Method [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Antennas and Propagation, 2014
According to the characteristics of the polarizability in frequency domain of three common models of dispersive media, the relation between the polarization vector and electric field intensity is converted into a time domain differential equation of second order with the polarization vector by using the conversion from frequency to time domain ...
