The local structure of molecular reaction intermediates at surfaces [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
A critical review is presented of the results of (experimental) quantitative structural studies of molecular reaction intermediates at surfaces; i.e. molecular species that do not exist naturally in the gas phase and, in most cases, are implicated in ...

Photochemistry of Aromatic N‐Oxides in Water Probed by Time‐Resolved X‐ray Absorption Spectroscopy

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, EarlyView.
Time‐resolved XAS at the nitrogen and oxygen K‐edges is applied to the photorearrangement of two N‐oxides in water. Pyridine N‐oxide rapidly forms the oxaziridine isomer. Pyridazine N‐oxide undergoes ring opening to the diazo compound, without any evidence of intermediates.

Probing the Influence of Sulfur–Aromatic Interactions on the Electronic Structure of Gas‐Phase Peptides

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, EarlyView.
Just as fingerprints reveal identity, spectroscopic fingerprints reveal molecular secrets. In this article, we show parts of the unique fingerprint of the sulfur–aromatic interaction. By measuring how this force alters the electronic structure of gas‐phase peptides, we provide a fundamental understanding of interactions that give insights into the ...

The Growth Behavior of Amorphous Hydrogenated Carbon a-C:H Layers on Industrial Polycarbonates—A Weak Interlayer and a Distinct Dehydrogenation Zone

open access: yesC, 2021
Polycarbonate (PC) is a material that is used in many areas: automotive, aerospace engineering and data storage industries. Its hardness is of particular importance, but some applications are affected by its low wettability or scratch susceptibility ...

Internal molecular conformation of organic glasses: A NEXAFS study

open access: yesThe Journal of Chemical Physics, 2021
The origin of the exceptional stability of molecular glasses grown by physical vapor deposition (PVD) is not well understood. Differences in glass density have been correlated with thermodynamic stability for thin films of N,N′-Bis(3-methylphenyl)-N,N′-diphenylbenzidine (TPD) grown by PVD at specific substrate temperatures below the glass transition ...

Adsorption of 5-Fluorouracil on Au(111) and Cu(111) surfaces

open access: yesAIP Advances, 2019
The adsorption of 5-Fluorouracil (5FU) on Au(111) and Cu(111) surfaces as a function of molecular coverage and temperature has been studied, using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy.

Nitrogen doping of TiO2 photocatalyst forms a second eg state in the Oxygen (1s) NEXAFS pre-edge

open access: yes, 2011
Close inspection of the pre-edge in oxygen near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure spectra of single step, gas phase synthesized titanium oxynitride photocatalysts with 20 nm particle size reveals an additional eg resonance in the VB that went ...

Curvature and Microenvironment Regulation Enable Robust Seawater Electrochemical Hydrogen Peroxide Synthesis for On‐Site Marine Aquaculture

open access: yesInterdisciplinary Materials, EarlyView.
This work designs pentagon‐defect‐enriched interconnected spherical carbon (PD/IS‐C) via curvature and microenvironment co‐engineering for seawater H2O2 electrosynthesis. Curvature modulates electronic structure to boost reactivity, while local alkaline microenvironment repels Cl− for enhanced stability, endowing PD/IS‐C with exceptional catalytic ...

An all‐polymer blend for photovoltaic applications: A combined photoabsorption, photoemission and ab initio multi‐configurational study

open access: yesPolymer International, EarlyView.
Near‐edge X‐ray absorption fine structure, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and multi‐configuration self‐consistent field results show, respectively, preferential edge‐on and face‐on orientations for the thiophene and naphthalene diimide units of the PBDB‐T‐SF:P(NDI2OD‐T2) all‐polymer blend, and surface accumulation of the acceptor.
