Use of NEXRAD to Meet FAA and Aviation Needs

Air Traffic Control Quarterly, 1994
The Next Generation Weather Radar (NEXRAD) program is a joint effort of the U.S. Departments of Commerce, Defense, and Transportation to develop, deploy, and support a network of over 135 Doppler weather radars called the Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D).

Meteorological Considerations Used in Planning the NEXRAD Network

Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, 1989
A systematic and objective approach was used to optimize the siting of the individual radars forming the Next Generation Weather Radar (NEXRAD) network. Prime consideration was given to meteorological factors, in conjunction with the user agencies' needs and the population distribution.

NEXRAD NWS Polarimetric Precipitation Product Evaluation for IFloodS

Journal of Hydrometeorology, 2015
AbstractThe NEXRAD program has recently upgraded the WSR-88D network observational capability with dual polarization (DP). In this study, DP quantitative precipitation estimates (QPEs) provided by the current version of the NWS system are evaluated using a dense rain gauge network and two other single-polarization (SP) rainfall products.

A high performance transmitter for the NEXRAD radar system

IEEE Conference Record of the 1988 Eighteenth Power Modulator Symposium, 2003
An S-band radar transmitter developed for the Next Generation Weather Radar (NEXRAD) operates at dual RF pulsewidths of 1.5 and 5.0 mu s and variable PRF (pulse repetition frequency) ranging between 300 and 1300 p.p.s. The transmitter has demonstrated a phase stability of better than 57 dB.

Implementation of polarimetric capability for the WSR-88D (NEXRAD) radar

Proceedings of the IEEE 1997 National Aerospace and Electronics Conference. NAECON 1997, 2002
Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) is currently under development at the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL). This method involves simultaneous transmission of two linearly polarized signals, and reception and processing of horizontal and vertical components using separate receivers.

The Role of NEXRAD in Aircraft Navigation and Flight Safety Enhancement

Navigation, 1984
The next generation weather radar system (NEXRAD) is expected to be an important element in the improved air traffic control plan being currently shaped by the Federal Aviation Administration. This paper assesses the probable impact of the proposed NEXRAD system on flight safety as well as on air traffic control.

Echo Size and Asymmetry: Impact on NEXRAD Storm Identification

Journal of Applied Meteorology, 1990
The effects of echo shape and radar viewing angle on detecting small thunderstorms with the NEXRAD storm identification algorithms are examined. The amorphous low-level echo shapes are modeled as ellipses with major axes ranging from 5-15 km and minor axes varying between 2-5 km.

NEXRAD and the Broadcast Weather Industry: Preparing to Share the Technology

Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, 1990
This paper describes results from a survey designed to establish the current level of radar and computer technology of the television weather industry, and to assess the awareness and attitudes of television weather forecasters toward the Next Generation Weather Radar (NEXRAD) program and its potential impact on the field of broadcast meteorology.

Improvement of NEXRAD Rainfall Data for Central and South Florida

World Environmental and Water Resources Congress 2008, 2008
The South Florida Water Management District (District) is responsible for managing water resources in 16-counties over a 46,439-square kilometer (17,930 square-mile) area. The area extends from Orlando to Key West and from the Gulf Coast to the Atlantic Ocean and contains the country's second largest lake — Lake Okeechobee and the world famous ...
