Abstract This paper reports on the findings of a natural experiment based on a sample of 1123 children aged 4–8 from the provinces of Punjab in Pakistan, and Gujarat in India. It looks at the impact of attendance (or not) in early schooling on the cognitive and social–emotional development of young children.

El Niño Tropical Pacific Ocean surface current and temperature evolution in 2002 and outlook for early 2003 [PDF]
The timing and magnitude of the 2002–2003 El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) warm episode has been monitored for the first time with near real time satellite‐derived surface current (SC) fields in addition to the operational temperature, wind and sea level satellite and in situ measurements previously used.

Anomalously cool clumped isotope temperatures in tropical lagoon carbonates
Carbonate clumped isotopes were used to reconstruct paleoclimate from lagoon sediments in the central tropical Pacific. Results were anomalously cool compared to modern measurements and other paleoclimate records. This study highlights the important of understanding carbonate facies and depositional environments in interpreting clumped isotope results.

The fossil diatoms of lake Yambo, Ecuador. A possible records of El Niño events
Abstract Fossil diatoms from a sediment core of Lake Yambo, a lake in an endorheic, desert region of the Ecuadorian Andes, provide a record of precipitation events that can be linked to the ENSO phenomenon. Abnormally high precipitation in the region during the 1982-83 El Niño caused a substantial drop in the lake's conductivity.

Temperature generally drives latitudinal patterns in the strength of trophic interactions, including consumption rates. However, local community and other environmental conditions might also affect consumption, disrupting latitudinal gradients, which results in complex large‐scale patterns.

Abstract Long term changes in catches of two sardinella species off equatorial West Africa seem inconsistent with their thermal preferences. Sardinella maderensis is usually fished during the warm season in low salinity waters, while S. aurita is associated with cold upwelled waters. However, in the Congo fisheries, S.
