Contingency management to promote treatment engagement in comorbid alcohol use disorder and alcohol‐related liver disease: Findings from a pilot randomized controlled trial

open access: yesAlcohol, Clinical and Experimental Research, EarlyView.
This pilot trial explored the feasibility of contingency management to promote treatment engagement in patients with comorbid alcohol use disorder and alcohol‐related liver disease. Participants were offered integrated care, and those in the intervention arm were additionally offered a voucher‐based contingency management intervention.

Alcohol and aging: Next‐generation epigenetic clocks predict biological age acceleration in individuals with alcohol use disorder

open access: yesAlcohol, Clinical and Experimental Research, EarlyView.
Our study investigated the performance of five epigenetic clocks by evaluating associations with alcohol use disorder (AUD) and various alcohol‐related phenotypes. Both DNAm GrimAge versions were associated with AUD and alcohol behaviors/clinical measures in the total sample and age subgroups.

Blood phosphatidylethanol measurements indicate GLP‐1 receptor stimulation causes delayed decreases in alcohol consumption

open access: yesAlcohol, Clinical and Experimental Research, EarlyView.
Glucagon‐like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP‐1RAs) are effective for treating obesity (BMI ≥30) and are being investigated as a novel treatment for alcohol use disorder (AUD). This secondary analysis of a randomized clinical trial evaluated the effect of exenatide versus placebo on alcohol consumption using phosphatidylethanol (PEth) in 30 AUD ...

Insula under the influence: Alcohol‐induced changes in resting state functional connectivity

open access: yesAlcohol, Clinical and Experimental Research, EarlyView.
This study explored how acute alcohol consumption alters the resting‐state functional connectivity (rsFC) of the insular cortex (IC) in healthy social drinkers. Alcohol intake disrupted rsFC of the IC with numerous brain regions, including the anterior cingulate cortex, superior temporal gyrus, middle frontal gyrus, precuneus, and basal ganglia ...
