The paradox of nicotinic acetylcholine receptor upregulation by nicotine

Trends in Pharmacological Sciences, 1990
Abstract Chronic exposure to agonist (or conditions that increase the synaptic concentration of the natural transmitter, such as blockade of inactivation mechanisms) results in a downregulation of the target receptor. Conversely, chronic exposure to antagonist (or conditions that decrease the synaptic concentration of transmitter, including ...

Immunology of the Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor

1979
The classical surface antigens of Enterobacteriaceae: 0, K, and H antigens have been studied extensively in the past and have provided a basis for the taxonomy of this family (Kauffmann, 1966, 1975). In comparison to the vast knowledge accumulated on the structure, localization, genetic determination, and biologic effects of O and K antigens (Weinbaum ...

Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the brain

The nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) is the archetypal neurotransmitter receptor within the superfamily of pentameric ligand-gated ion channels (pLGICs). Typically, it mediates fast synaptic transmission in response to its endogenous ligand, acetylcholine, and can also intervene in slower signaling mechanisms via intracellular metabolic ...

The Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor

1985
The acetylcholine receptor (AcChR) from Torpedo electroplax has been isolated both in its native membrane-bound state and by affinity chromatography after solubilization (see Conti-Tronconi and Raftery, 1982). Purified membrane fragments can reseal, forming closed, right-side-out vesicles, which can be used for both functional and structural studies ...

Protein Phosphorylation of Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor

Critical Reviews in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, 1989
The nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAcChR) is a ligand-gated ion channel found in the postsynaptic membranes of electric organs, at the neuromuscular junction, and at nicotinic cholinergic synapses of the mammalian central and peripheral nervous system.

Enzymatic carboxymethylation of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1980
Summary The enzymatic carboxymethylation of the acetylcholine receptors isolated from Torpedo california is described. The acetylcholine receptor was found to be one of the most active substrates for protein carboxymethylase. The receptor methylation is not affected by the binding of cholinergic ligand.

Desensitization of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor by diisopropylfluorophosphate

Journal of Biochemical Toxicology, 1988
AbstractThe interaction of diisopropylfluorophosphate (DFP) with the nicotinic acetylcholine (ACh) receptor of Torpedo electric organ was studied, using [3H]‐phencyclidine ([3H]‐PCP) as a reporter probe. Phencyclidine binds with different kinetics to resting, activated, and desensitized receptor conformations.
