Polarographic Study of Nifurtimox

Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 1990
Nifurtimox is polarographically reducible over the whole pH range, the nitro group being reduced to the hydroxylamine group in a 4e process and subsequently the amine being formed in a 2e process at a pH value below 4. The C = N-N linkage is reduced by a mechanism involving reductive fission of the N-N bond.

Update on nifurtimox for treatment of Chagas disease

Drugs of Today, 2021
Chagas disease is a vector-borne neglected tropical disease caused by Trypanosoma cruzi. It is a systemic and chronic parasitic infection which is endemic in 21 countries with 10 million cases worldwide and 12,000 annual deaths. Around 70 million people in the Americas are at risk of contracting this disease, and less than 1% of infected people are ...

A New Analogue of Nifurtimox

Acta Crystallographica Section C Crystal Structure Communications, 1996
1-¿[(5-Nitro-2-furyl)methylene]amino¿-1,2,4-triazole, C7H5N5O3, is a new analogue of nifurtimox with activity against Tripanosoma cruzi. In the crystal structure, the molecule lies on a mirror plane and has an E-sZ conformation along the N = C-C moiety. The molecules are linked through C-H...O and C-H...N interactions.

Trypanosoma cruzi: Nifurtimox's effect on infectivity

Experimental Parasitology, 1977
Abstract Mice were protected from infection with Trypanosoma cruzi , Tulahuen strain, by Nifurtimox [3-methyl-4-(5′-nitrofurfurylidene-amino)tetrahydro-4 H -1, 4-thiazine-1,1-dioxide] treatment with doses currently used for human therapy (10 mg/kg/day).

Mutagenicity of nifurtimox in Escherichia coli

Mutation Research/Genetic Toxicology, 1980
The effects of nifurtimox, a nitrofuran derivative, on killing and mutation induction in 3 Escherichia coli strains having different DNA-repair systems for UV lesion were studied and compared with the effects of furylfuramide. Nifurtimox induces mutations at a high frequency in both Hs3OR (uvrA-) and H/r30R (radiation-resistant), although no ...
