Benznidazole biotransformation in rat heart microsomal fraction without observable ultrastructural alterations: comparison to Nifurtimox-induced cardiac effects

open access: yesMemorias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, 2008
Benznidazole (Bz) and Nifurtimox (Nfx) have been used to treat Chagas disease. As recent studies have de-monstrated cardiotoxic effects of Nfx, we attempted to determine whether Bz behaves similarly.

African Trypanosomes undermine humoral responses and vaccine development : link with inflammatory responses? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
African trypanosomosis is a debilitating disease of great medical and socioeconomical importance. It is caused by strictly extracellular protozoan parasites capable of infecting all vertebrate classes including human, livestock, and game animals.

Natural Products from Mexican Medicinal Plants as Promising Trypanocidal Drugs

open access: yesChemistrySelect, Volume 10, Issue 37, October 6, 2025.
Chagas disease (American Trypanosomiasis) is caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi. Worldwide it is one of the seventeen neglected tropical diseases. There is a need of new drugs. This review assesses the literature (2012‐2024) of secondary metabolites isolated from Mexican plants active against this parasite.

Targeting the substrate preference of a type I nitroreductase to develop antitrypanosomal quinone-based prodrugs. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Nitroheterocyclic prodrugs are used to treat infections caused by Trypanosoma cruzi and Trypanosoma brucei. A key component in selectivity involves a specific activation step mediated by a protein homologous with type I nitroreductases, enzymes found ...

Chagas disease screening of maternal donors in publicly banked umbilical cord blood in North Carolina, United States 2007–2023

open access: yesPregnancy, Volume 1, Issue 4, July 2025.
Abstract Introduction Over 300,000 people living in the United States are estimated to have Chagas disease, a condition for which mother to child transmission may occur and early diagnosis is essential to reduce Chagas‐related morbidity and mortality. This study evaluated positive Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi) screening serology among maternal donors of

Aryl Phosphoramidates of 5-Phospho Erythronohydroxamic Acid, A New Class of Potent Trypanocidal Compounds [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
RNAi and enzymatic studies have shown the importance of 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6-PGDH) in Trypanosoma brucei for the parasite survival and make it an attractive drug target for the development of new treatments against human African ...

Trypanocidal Activity of Long Chain Diamines and Aminoalcohols

open access: yesMolecules, 2015
Thirteen aminoalcohols and eight diamines were obtained and tested against Trypanosoma cruzi epimastigotes strains MG, JEM and CL-B5 clone. Some of them were equal or more potent (1.0–6.6 times) than the reference compound nifurtimox.
