Cloning and expression of boule and dazl in the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)
Gene, 2014The Deleted in Azoospermia (DAZ) family of RNA binding proteins consists of highly conserved genes boule, daz and daz-like (dazl) essential for germ cell development. boule is known for its unisexual meiotic expression in invertebrates and mammals, but meiotic-specific female expression plus meiosis-preferential male expression in trout, and meiosis ...

Histopathology of “hole-in-the-head” disease in the Nile Tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus
Aquaculture, 2007Abstract The gross morphology and histopathology of lesions formed in “hole-in-the-head” disease, commonly found in cichlids, is described in the Nile Tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus . The most severe lesions, which in some fish extended into the lateral line canals, were found posterior to the eye.

Pharmacokinetics and bioavailability of cefuroxime in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)
Veterinary Research CommunicationsCefuroxime is a broad-spectrum antibiotic extensively utilized in humans and animals. Although it has been reported as beneficial against certain fish infections, pharmacokinetic studies are lacking. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the pharmacokinetics of cefuroxime following intravascular (IV, n = 72), intraperitoneal (IP, n = 72 ...

Dietary copper exposure and recovery in Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus
Aquatic Toxicology, 2006There are few reports of dietary copper (Cu) toxicity to warm water species of freshwater fish, and little is known about recovery from dietary Cu exposure. In this study Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) were fed to satiation on a Cu-loaded diet (2000 mg Cu kg(-1)dry weight (dw) feed), or a control diet (3 mg Cu kg(-1)dw feed), for 42 days.

Since 2015, a novel orthomyxo-like virus, tilapia lake virus (TiLV) has been associated with outbreaks of disease and massive mortality of cultured Nile and red tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus and Oreochromis spp., respectively) in Thailand. In this study, TiLV was isolated from field samples and propagated in the permissive E-11 cell line, with ...

Nitrite-induced methemoglobinemia in Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus
Journal of Applied Ichthyology, 2006Summary Exposure of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (mean weight, 55.72 ± 4.30 g), to two sublethal NO2–N concentrations was studied for 24 and 48 h in a static test. In nitrite exposure tests, the percentages of methemoglobin, external nitrite, plasma nitrite, hemoglobin and hematocrit were assessed.

Masculinization of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) by immersion in androgens
Aquaculture, 1999Abstract The use of all-male populations increases the efficiency and feasibility of tilapia aquaculture. The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of a short-term immersion procedure for masculinizing Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus).

Effects of atrazine on Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)
2013Mechanization of agriculture to promote and improve the yields from agricultural practices has necessitated the use of pesticides and other agrochemicals. The effects of using these pesticides on the environment are rarely considered by farmers. This study investigated the effects and sub-lethal effect of atrazine on tilapia, an ubiquitous culturable ...

Somatic transgenesis in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) [PDF]
There were two main objectives for this project. The first was to investigate the fate and persistence of transgene DNA after direct injection into the somatic cells of tilapia. This was achieved using the bacterial reporter gene lacZ. The difference in expression levels gained using tilapia β-actin/lacZ and carp β-actin/lacZ constructs were also ...

Toxicity of Magnesium Sulphate to Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)
UTTAR PRADESH JOURNAL OF ZOOLOGYMagnesium sulphate commonly known as Epsom salt is used in aquaculture in order to treat intestinal problems related to digestion or parasites. In the present study an effort was made to understand the toxicity of magnesium sulphate in sub adults of Oreochromis niloticus (82± 4.5g). Acute toxicity test by bath treatment was done by exposing the fish to
