Effect of Salinity Stress on Gut–Brain–Gonad Axis in the Red‐Eared Slider (Trachemys scripta elegans)

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
The increase in salinity leads to changes in the gut microbiota and metabolites of Trachemys scripta elegans, affecting the synthesis and secretion of neurotransmitters or precursors, which can inhibit the secretion of reproductive hormones and affect the self‐renewal and differentiation process of spermatogonial stem cells.

Genome Expansion of ZPB1(a) and ZPC1(a) in Basal Species or Liver Expression of ZPB1a and ZPC1aa in Advanced Species, Two Different Strategies to Ensure Sufficient ZP Synthesis in Teleosts

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
We found that teleosts employed two different strategies to ensure sufficient ZP (zona pellucida) synthesis: expansion of ZPB1(a) and ZPC1(a) in basal species or liver expression of ZPB1a and ZPC1aa in advanced species. The N‐terminus of expanded ZPB1(a) or ZPC1(a) and liver‐expressed ZPB1a contains repeated units or low‐complexity regions to form ...

Aluminum as an endocrine disruptor in female Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)

open access: yesComparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part C: Toxicology & Pharmacology, 2010
The effects of aluminum on plasma ion, lipid, protein and steroid hormone concentration were evaluated in Oreochromis niloticus broodstock females. Lipid and protein concentrations from the gonads and liver were also measured. Experiments were performed at neutral and acidic water pH.

Gonadal Development–Related Genes and a Male‐Specific Genetic Marker Identified in the Endangered Sichuan Taimen (Hucho bleekeri)

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Integrated transcriptomic and proteomic analyses were used to validate gonadal development–related genes and to identify a sex‐specific molecular marker in Hucho bleekeri. ABSTRACT Sex determination and differentiation represent fundamental topics in reproductive biology. Sichuan taimen (Hucho bleekeri), a first‐class national protected fish species in

Mercury concentration in muscle, bellyfat and liver from Oreochromis niloticus and Lates niloticus consumed in Lake Albert fishing communities in Uganda

open access: yesCogent Food & Agriculture, 2016
Without surveillance studies on mercury (Hg) levels in predominant fish species and parts eaten in a fishing community, the FAO/WHO guidelines might be surpassed, hence health risk. A monitoring study in a developing country with 29 Oreochromis niloticus

Effects of continuous light and light intensity on the growth performance and gonadal development of Nile tilapia

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Zootecnia, 2021
Continuous illumination has been known to exert positive effects by stimulating growth and delaying unwanted maturation in seasonal-temperate farmed fish species like salmonids.

Using Long‐Term Monitoring Data to Assess Temporal Patterns in Fish Community Assemblages in Florida Lakes

open access: yesFisheries Management and Ecology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In an effort to increase the relevancy of fish community data for management, we used fish community data to conduct a statewide assessment of Florida's freshwater fisheries resources and compare the relationships between environmental factors and freshwater fish communities over time.

Expression of corticoid‐regulatory genes in the gills of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) parr and smolt and during salinity acclimation

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract In teleost fishes, cortisol is the major corticoid and has both glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid actions. However, how fish tissues discriminate between these distinct corticosteroid actions is unclear. In mammals, the major factors responsible for intracellular corticosteroid regulation are glucocorticoid receptors (grs) and the ...

IMPACT OF AQUAFAT-O® ON GROWTH PERFORMANCE, FEED UTILIZATION, CHEMICAL COMPOSITION AND ECONOMIC EFFICIENCY OF ADULT NILE TILAPIA, Oreochromis niloticus [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Animal and Poultry Production, 2015
The aims of the present study were to assess the effects of the replacement  graded levels of aquafat-O® (0, 1, 2 and 3%) instead of corn oil on the growth performance, feed and nutrients utilization, chemical composition of the whole fish body and the ...

‘It's not much, but it's honest work’: The status of environmental DNA analyses of fish biodiversity in southern Africa

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Environmental DNA (eDNA) biodiversity surveys have the power to transform the detection of species in natural environments, which is crucial for the conservation and management of freshwater, estuarine and marine environments. Globally, eDNA‐based analyses have increased significantly, with fishes being the most widely studied aquatic ...
