DELAYED POTASSIUM EFFECT IN NITELLA [PDF]
In normal cells of Nitella replacement of NaCl by KCl makes the P.D. much less positive: this is called the potassium effect. Cells which have lost the potassium effect usually show little or no change of P.D. when NaCl is replaced by KCl but an occasional cell responds after a delay.

Abstract Introduction Temporary ponds in the Mediterranean climate have a high conservation value, but many have been severely destroyed or degraded. Pond restoration and new pond creation have been engaged widely. Evaluations of the success of such operations are generally carried out over 10–15 years and show divergent results over this timeframe. In

Macrophyte commonness and co‐occurrence were quantified to support objective classifications of species distributions in Midwestern lakes. This framework provides a practical tool for conservation prioritization (e.g. identifying species that are rare at regional and local scales that may be more susceptible to local disturbance), invasive species risk

ABSTRACT Sympatric morphs provide valuable systems for studying incipient divergence despite incomplete reproductive isolation. In connected waterbodies with spatially heterogeneous habitats, one or more morphs may form metapopulation structures, generating eco‐evolutionary dynamics unlike those in single lakes.

Significance Statement TRB proteins in the moss P. patens are essential for normal development, telomere maintenance, and transcriptional regulation. Our findings demonstrate the evolutionary conservation of TRB functions across land plants and highlight their ancient origin in streptophytes.

We investigated short‐term (1–3 years) pond biodiversity responses to restoration at a variety of management intensities. Ponds undergoing the most intense intervention (major woody vegetation and sediment removal) showed the strongest biodiversity uplift. This is likely in part due to a seedbank response and highlights the value of intense restoration

Absence of biomagnetic effects in Nitella
The ability of N. flexilis and N. translucens to survive exposure to magnetic fields up to 1.6 T for extended periods of time was tested. Internodal cells subjected to such fields for as long as 72 h showed no evidence of damage. The active response of internodal cells was studied using an especially constructed sample chamber which allowed the use of ...
