Dietary Selenium Deficiency Accelerates the Onset of Aging‐Related Gut Microbial Changes in Aged Telomere‐Humanized Mice, With Akkermansia muciniphila Being the Most Prominent and Alleviating Selenium Deficiency‐Induced Type 2 Diabetes

open access: yesAging Cell, EarlyView.
Gut Akkermansia muciniphila is enriched by dietary selenium deficiency in aged telomere‐humanized mice and counteracts dietary selenium deficiency‐induced type 2 diabetes. ABSTRACT Previous studies have shown that dietary selenium (Se) deficiency in mice reshapes gut microbiota, exacerbates healthspan deterioration (e.g., type 2 diabetes), and ...

Altered Relaxation and Mitochondria‐Endoplasmic Reticulum Contacts Precede Major (Mal)Adaptations in Aging Skeletal Muscle and Are Prevented by Exercise

open access: yesAging Cell, EarlyView.
Slowed relaxation and altered MERCs embody early stages of aging in muscle, and are prevented by regular exercise. ABSTRACT Sarcopenia, or age‐related muscle dysfunction, contributes to morbidity and mortality. Besides decreases in muscle force, sarcopenia is associated with atrophy and fast‐to‐slow fiber type switching, which is typically secondary to

Age‐Related Complement C3 Drives Memory Impairments and Associated Neuropathologies in a Mouse Model

open access: yesAging Cell, EarlyView.
Age‐related complement C3 elevation induces memory impairments and neuropathology by dysregulating astrocytic insulin signaling and triggering mitochondrial dysfunction. Critically, antibody blockade of C3 in mouse brain tissue effectively reversed learning and memory deficits in mice, demonstrating that targeting C3 is a promising therapeutic strategy.

Aortic Pulse Wave Velocity and Extracellular Water Expansion in Hemodialysis Patients

open access: yesArtificial Organs, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Pulse wave velocity (PWV), a measurement of arterial stiffness, is a risk factor for cardiovascular mortality in hemodialysis patients. Debate continues as to whether PWV is increased by volume overload. As such, we reviewed the association between volume overload and PWV.
