Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Rapid Nitrate Reduction Assay with Intact Microbial Cells or Spores
Many microorganisms have the capacity to use nitrate as a respiratory electron acceptor. Reduction of nitrate is catalyzed by a multi-subunit nitrate reductase that is often located associated with the cytoplasmic membrane and has its active site ...

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

The conversion of nitrate to ammonium, i.e., nitrate reduction, is a major consumer of reductants in plants. Previous studies have reported that the mitochondrial alternative oxidase (AOX) is upregulated under limited nitrate reduction conditions ...

We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

Interaction between nitrate and trichloroethene bioreduction in mixed anaerobic cultures
Bioremediation of trichloroethene (TCE)-contaminated sites often leads to groundwater acidification, while nitrate-polluted sites tend to generate alkalization.

Inositol pyrophosphates are energy‐rich signaling molecules that perform critical functions in cells. Three different families of phosphatases hydrolyze the β phosphate of the inositol pyrophosphate molecules: two have narrow specificities and one is promiscuous.
