Microbial Reduction of Chromate in the presence of Nitrate by Three Nitrate Respiring Organisms. [PDF]
A major challenge for the bioremediation of toxic metals is the co-occurrence of nitrate, as it can inhibit metal transformation. Geobacter metallireducens, Desulfovibrio desulfuricans, and Sulfurospirillum barnesii are three soil bacteria that can ...

Regulation of Nitrate Assimilation and Nitrate Respiration in Aerobacter aerogenes [PDF]
The influence of growth conditions on assimilatory and respiratory nitrate reduction in Aerobacter aerogenes was studied. The level of nitrate reductase activity in cells, growing in minimal medium with nitrate as the sole nitrogen source, was much lower under aerobic than anaerobic conditions.

Impacts of nitrate and nitrite on physiology of Shewanella oneidensis. [PDF]
Shewanella oneidensis exhibits a remarkable versatility in anaerobic respiration, which largely relies on its diverse respiratory pathways. Some of these are expressed in response to the existence of their corresponding electron acceptors (EAs) under ...

Seasonal Patterns of Soil Respiration and Related Soil Biochemical Properties under Nitrogen Addition in Winter Wheat Field. [PDF]
Understanding the changes of soil respiration under increasing N fertilizer in cropland ecosystems is crucial to accurately predicting global warming. This study explored seasonal variations of soil respiration and its controlling biochemical properties ...

Information on how emerging pathogens can invade and persist and spread within host populations remains sparse. In the 1980s, a multidrug-resistant Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium clone lysogenized by a bacteriophage carrying the sopE virulence ...

Role of diatoms in the spatial-temporal distribution of intracellular nitrate in intertidal sediment. [PDF]
Intracellular nitrate storage allows microorganisms to survive fluctuating nutrient availability and anoxic conditions in aquatic ecosystems. Here we show that diatoms, ubiquitous and highly abundant microalgae, represent major cellular reservoirs of ...

Root Respiration Associated with Nitrate Assimilation by Cowpea [PDF]
Nitrate uptake by roots of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) was measured using (15)NO(3) (-), and the energy cost to the root was estimated by respirometry. Roots of 8-day-old cowpea seedlings respired 0.6 to 0.8 milligram CO(2) per plant per hour for growth and maintenance. Adding 10 millimolar NO(3) (-) to the root medium increased respiration by 20 to 30%

In order to reduce nitrate in vivo, the spore‐specific respiratory nitrate reductase, Nar1, of Streptomyces coelicolor relies on an active cytochrome bcc‐aa3 oxidase supercomplex (bcc‐aa3 supercomplex).

Aerobic nitrate respiration in a nitrite-oxidising bioreactor [PDF]
The ability of heterotrophic bacteria in a nitrite-oxidising bioreactor to respire with nitrate as an electron acceptor was examined. Approximately 70% of 1000 heterotrophic isolates were able to express a nitrate reductase. A detailed survey of 15 isolates showed that five expressed the azide-insensitive nitrate reductase encoded by the napA gene.
