Inappropriate Total Oxidant/Antioxidant Status, Nitric Oxide Oxidation End Products and Trace Element Levels in Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease [PDF]

open access: yesIranian Journal of Colorectal Research, 2018
Background: This study aimed at evaluating oxidant and antioxidant markers (including nitrite, nitrate, total antioxidant capacity(TAC), malondialdehyde (MDA), iron, selenium, glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and glutathione reductase (GR) in patients ...

Is methemoglobin an inert bystander, biomarker or a mediator of oxidative stress—The example of anemia?

open access: yesRedox Biology, 2013
Acute anemia increases the risk for perioperative morbidity and mortality in critically ill patients who experience blood loss and fluid resuscitation (hemodilution).

Denitrification, activity of bacterial flocs, and growth of a filamentous bacterium in relation with the bulking of activated sludge [PDF]

open access: yes, 1978
Activated sludge with poor settling characteristics is caught under the term "bulking" sludge. Various types of bulking activated sludge can be distinguished.1) Sludge containing an abundance of filamentous microorganisms.2) Sludge, characterized by ...

Nitrite reductase activity of nonsymbiotic hemoglobins from Arabidopsis thaliana.

open access: yesBiochemistry, 2012
Plant nonsymbiotic hemoglobins possess hexacoordinate heme geometry similar to that of the heme protein neuroglobin. We recently discovered that deoxygenated neuroglobin converts nitrite to nitric oxide (NO), an important signaling molecule involved in ...

Microbially Influenced Corrosion in Epoxy‐Ceramic Coated Carbon‐Steel Cooler

open access: yesMaterials and Corrosion, EarlyView.
A significant localization of corrosion attacks up to 1 mm deep were found in coated carbon‐steel cooler. Corrosion products and biofilm were enriched in mixed bacterial community including the genera Sulfuritalea and Methylotenera. Analysis of metabolic markers confirmed their coexistence with sulfate‐reducing bacteria.

The relationship between redox enzyme activity and electrochemical potential—cellular and mechanistic implications from protein film electrochemistry [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
In protein film electrochemistry a redox protein of interest is studied as an electroactive film adsorbed on an electrode surface. For redox enzymes this configuration allows quantification of the relationship between catalytic activity and ...

Virus-Encoded Ribonucleotide Reductases [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2014
Ribonucleotide reductases are encoded by many viruses, but without other enzymes of nucleotide metabolism of no obvious use. A look at the enzymes' molecular properties and their possible mutator action may give clues.

How native state topology affects the folding of Dihydrofolate Reductase and Interleukin-1beta [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
The overall structure of the transition state and intermediate ensembles experimentally observed for Dihydrofolate Reductase and Interleukin-1beta can be obtained utilizing simplified models which have almost no energetic frustration. The predictive power of these models suggest that, even for these very large proteins with completely different folding

Bacteria‐responsive transformable peptide‐based nanomaterials inspired by human α‐defensin 6 for labeling and entrapping pathogenic bacteria

open access: yesResponsive Materials, EarlyView.
By simulating the host defense strategy of human α‐defensin 6, biomimetic transformable peptide‐based aggregation‐induced emssion nanomaterials (PBANs) were prepared. PBANs self‐assembled into nanoparticles under physiological conditions, and in situ transformed into nanofiber on bacterial surfaces through receptor‐ligand interactions in infected ...
