Ammonia- and Nitrite-Oxidizing Bacteria are Dominant in Nitrification of Maize Rhizosphere Soil Following Combined Application of Biochar and Chemical Fertilizer

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2021
Autotrophic nitrification is regulated by canonical ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and bacteria (AOB) and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB). To date, most studies have focused on the role of canonical ammonia oxidizers in nitrification while neglecting ...

Effect of the dilution rate on microbial competition: r-strategist can win over k-strategist at low substrate concentration. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2017
The conditions present in both in vitro and in vivo ecosystems determine the microbial population harbouring it. One commonly accepted theory is that a species with a high substrate affinity and low growth rate (k-strategist) will win the competition ...

Comparative Three-Barcode Phylogenetics and Soil Microbiomes of Planted and Wild Arbutus Strawberry Trees. [PDF]

open access: yesPlant Direct
ABSTRACT Taxonomic identification of closely related plants can be challenging due to convergent evolution, hybridization, and overlapping geographic distribution. To derive taxonomic relationships among planted and wild Arbutus plants across a large geographic range, we complemented three standard plastid barcodes rbcL, matK, and trnH‐psbA with soil ...

Phylogenetic analysis reveals an ancient gene duplication as the origin of the MdtABC efflux pump. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
The efflux pumps from the Resistance-Nodulation-Division family, RND, are main contributors to intrinsic antibiotic resistance in Gram-negative bacteria. Among this family, the MdtABC pump is unusual by having two inner membrane components.

Deoxyribonucleic acid in Nitrobacter carboxysomes [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Bacteriology, 1979
Carboxysomes were isolated from Nitrobacter winogradskyi and Nitrobacter agilis. The icosahedral particles contained double-stranded deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). In the presence of ethidium bromide and cesium chloride, the particle-bound DNA had a buoyant density of rho 25 = 1.701 g/cm3.
