Assimilation of Ammonia Nitrogen by Rumen Bacteria

Nature, 1959
AMMONIA is always present in the rumen liquor of sheep1 and the concentration varies with the kind of protein in the ration, but the addition of starch-rich foods such as maize meal or flaked maize to high-protein rations depresses the concentration2–4.

Plant Nitrogen Assimilation and Use Efficiency

Annual Review of Plant Biology, 2012
Crop productivity relies heavily on nitrogen (N) fertilization. Production and application of N fertilizers consume huge amounts of energy, and excess is detrimental to the environment; therefore, increasing plant N use efficiency (NUE) is essential for the development of sustainable agriculture.

Nitrogen Fixation and Assimilation

2013
New crop plants suited to grow in semiarid environments will be fundamental to the future of agriculture. The interactions between nitrogen supply and water availability that determine yield and quality in crops grown in semiarid environments are being elucidated.

Aspects of inorganic nitrogen assimilation in yeasts

Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, 1974
Cultures of Candida utilis utilise glutamate in preference to ammonia and ammonia in preference to nitrate. The nitrate reductase of this organism is induced by nitrate and repressed in cultures grown on glutamate or ammonia. Nitrate-grown cultures of C. utilis, irrespective of the medium nitrate concentration, behave as though nitrogen-limited.

Nitrogen Mineralization and Assimilation at Millimeter Scales

2011
The assimilation (uptake or immobilization) of inorganic nitrogen (N) and the production of ammonium (NH(4)(+)) from organic N compounds are universal functions of microorganisms, and the balance between these two processes is tightly regulated by the relative demands of microbes for N and carbon (C). In a heterogeneous environment, such as soils, bulk

Regulation of Nitrogen Assimilation

1996
The preferred single nitrogen source for Escherichia coli and other enteric bacteria is ammonia, in at least 1 mM concentration. Although a number of other nitrogen containing compounds for example arginine, proline, glutamine, glutamate and aspartate in the case of E.
