Effect of combined nitrogen on symbiotic nitrogen fixation in pea plants [PDF]

open access: yes, 1979
The nitrogen-fixing activity of the symbiotic system of Pisum sativum with Rhizobium leguminosarum is adversely affected by combined nitrogen. Both ammonium chloride and potassium nitrate, when added to the roots, lower the nitrogenase activity ...

Special Issue Editorial: Plant Nitrogen Assimilation and Metabolism

open access: yes, 2021
Nitrogen is an important macronutrient for plant growth and development. Research has long been carried out to elucidate the mechanisms involved in nitrogen uptake, assimilation, and utilization in plants.

L‐aspartate oxidase provides new insights into fumarate reduction in anaerobic darkness in Synechocystis sp. PCC6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Synechocystis strains deficient in succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) secrete more succinate than the WT under dark anaerobic conditions, supporting that SDH then primarily acts as SDH, not as a fumarate reductase. L‐aspartate oxidase (Laspo) from Synechocystis is functional under anaerobic conditions, reducing fumarate to succinate.

Metastatic niche shaped by host factors influences disseminated cancer cell fate

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Metastasis is shaped not only by cancer cells but also by the environments they encounter. This review explores how factors such as aging, diet, the microbiome, lifestyle, and environmental exposures remodel organ‐specific niches in the lung, liver, bone, and brain, influencing where metastatic cells survive, remain dormant, or grow, and ultimately ...

Nitrogen-fixing methane-utilizing bacteria [PDF]

open access: yes, 1976
Methane occurs abundantly in nature. In the presence of oxygen this gas may be metabolized by bacteria that are able to use it as carbon and energy source.

Smaller is better: nanobodies meet NMR

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nanobodies are single‐domain antigen‐binding fragments derived from camelid heavy chain antibodies. Their small size, high stability, and exceptional specificity make nanobodies uniquely useful probes for NMR studies of protein dynamics, transient conformational states, and protein–protein interactions.

An analysis of prognostic risk and immunotherapy response of glioblastoma patients based on single-cell landscape and nitrogen metabolism

open access: yesNeurobiology of Disease
Glioblastoma (GBM) is a highly invasive brain tumor of astrocytic origin. Nitrogen metabolism plays an instrumental role in the growth and progression of various tumors, including GBM.

PEPC of sugarcane regulated glutathione S-transferase and altered carbon–nitrogen metabolism under different N source concentrations in Oryza sativa

open access: yesBMC Plant Biology, 2021
Background Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) plays an important role in the primary metabolism of higher plants. Several studies have revealed the critical importance of PEPC in the interaction of carbon and nitrogen metabolism.

Membrane composition and thermodynamic identity as boundaries of life for synthetic cell research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
What makes a cell a cell? The boundary of a living cell is not just a wall. Read as a Markov blanket, the membrane separates internal from external states, generating identity and non‐equilibrium order. Can this identity be rebuilt from scratch in a synthetic cell?
