A case of disseminated Nocardia asteroides in a renal transplant recipient with cavitary lung lesions and cutaneous pustules is presented. Disseminated nocardiosis is a rare disease that occurs chiefly in the immunocompromised host and usually begins as a pleuropulmonary infection.

Nocardia asteroides in the Soil of Kuwait

A pilot study was undertaken to determine the occurrence and distribution of pathogenic nocardiae in Kuwaiti soil. A total of 102 soil samples collected from two localities were investigated by the paraffin bait technique. Nocardia asteroides was the only species isolated from 42 (41%) soil samples.

SUMMARY A case of exogenous Nocardia asteroides endophthalmitis with impending corneal perforation was diagnosed by culture and successfully treated with vitrectomy, penetrating keratoplasty, and intraocular, topical, and systemic antimicrobial therapy. The patient regained excellent vision.

For determination of neutrophil inhibition of nocardiae, neutrophils and nocardiae were incubated together. Filament formation and amino acid uptake by nocardiae were inhibited for 7.5 hr.
