Global Burden of Human Mycetoma: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Mycetoma is a chronic infectious disease of the subcutaneous tissue with a high morbidity. This disease has been reported from countries between 30°N and 15°S since 1840 but the exact burden of disease is not known.

A Comparison of Nocardia asteroides and Nocardia brasiliensis [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of General Microbiology, 1959
SUMMARY: A description of Nocardia asteroides (Eppinger) Blanchard, based on the examination of 98 strains, is presented and compared with a description of N. brasiliensis (Lindenberg) Castellani and Chalmers, based on 50 strains. Characteristics common to freshly isolated strains, variants of the same strain, and old stock strains are used in the ...

Nocardia Infection Presented as Intramuscular Abscess in a Kidney Transplant Recipient: Case Report and Literature Review. [PDF]

open access: yesCase Rep Nephrol
Background Nocardia is a gram‐positive bacterium capable of causing both local and systemic infections, typically in immunocompromised patients. The most common clinical presentation is pulmonary infection. Muscle abscess due to Nocardia infection without disseminated nocardiosis is rare.

Nocardia asteroides and Nocardia brasiliensis infections in mice [PDF]

open access: yesInfection and Immunity, 1976
A model for Nocardia asteroides and Nocardia brasiliensis infections in Swiss white mice has been established without the addition to the inocula of any form of adjuvant. Serial histopathological studies revealed that these two actinomycetes cause lesions that are quite different in their features. An acute suppurative abscess characterizes the lesions

Inactivation of rifampin by Nocardia brasiliensis [PDF]

open access: yesAntimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, 1993
Rifampin was glycosylated by a pathogenic species of Nocardia, i.e., Nocardia brasiliensis. The structures of two glycosylated compounds (RIP-1 and RIP-2) isolated from the culture broth of the bacterium were determined to be 3-formyl-23-(O-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl])rifamycin SV and 23-(O-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl])rifampin, respectively.

The impact of AlphaFold Protein Structure Database on the fields of life sciences

open access: yesPROTEOMICS, Volume 23, Issue 17, September 2023., 2023
Abstract Arguably, 2020 was the year of high‐accuracy protein structure predictions, with AlphaFold 2.0 achieving previously unseen accuracy in the Critical Assessment of Protein Structure Prediction (CASP). In 2021, DeepMind and EMBL‐EBI developed the AlphaFold Protein Structure Database to make an unprecedented number of reliable protein structure ...

Bacteriolytic activity in saliva of the hematophagous Triatoma infestans (Reduviidae) and novel characterization and expression site of a third lysozyme

open access: yesArchives of Insect Biochemistry and Physiology, Volume 113, Issue 3, July 2023., 2023
Bacteriolytic activity after zymography of saliva obtained from unfed nymphs or 7 days after feeding and after an incubation at pH 4 and pH 6, followed by staining and additional incubation in water. Molecular masses of marker proteins are displayed on the left.

Antifungal Activity of Natural Naphthoquinones and Anthraquinones against Madurella mycetomatis

open access: yesChemistry &Biodiversity, Volume 20, Issue 5, May 2023., 2023
Abstract Eumycetoma, the fungal form of the neglected tropical disease mycetoma, is a crippling infectious disease with low response rates to currently available antifungal drugs. In this study, a series of natural naphthoquinones and anthraquinones was evaluated for their activity against Madurella mycetomatis, which is the most common causative agent

A case of nocardiosis in a patient with ulcerative colitis on chronic corticosteroids, infliximab, and upadacitinib

open access: yesClinical Case Reports, Volume 11, Issue 5, May 2023., 2023
We report a complex infection of Nocardiosis and C. difficile colitis that developed in a patient with ulcerative colitis in the setting of chronic immunosuppression and malnutrition. Key Clinical Message Immunosuppression, malnutrition, and underlying infection can unmask obscure infections which can be challenging to identify.

Identification of Nocardia and non‐tuberculous Mycobacterium species by MALDI‐TOF MS using the VITEK MS coupled to IVD and RUO databases

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 16, Issue 4, Page 778-783, April 2023., 2023
A standardized, MALDI‐TOF based, commercial method for the rapid identification of Nocardia and non‐tuberculous mycobacterium (NTM) isolates has been evaluated. The method allowed 95.6% and 90.6% correct species‐level identification for Nocardia and NTM, respectively.
