Hazardous Exposure to Impulse Noise
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1968This paper presents impulse-noise damage-risk criteria based on conclusions of independent British and American studies and on the work of other research workers in this field. Most of the studies that led to this criterion were performed with noise from small arms, but the criterion is general enough to permit assessment of most other types of impulse

Noise exposure in convertible automobiles
The Journal of Laryngology & Otology, 2010AbstractObjective:To quantify the noise exposure received while driving a convertible automobile with the top open, compared with the top closed. Methods:Five different convertible automobiles were driven, with the top both closed and open, and noise levels measured.

Playback Experiments for Noise Exposure
2016Playbacks are a useful tool for conducting well-controlled and replicated experiments on the effects of anthropogenic noise, particularly for repeated exposures. However, playbacks are unlikely to fully reproduce original sources of anthropogenic noise.

Noise Exposure of Music Teachers
Journal of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene, 2004A noise exposure survey was performed to assess the risk of hearing loss to school music teachers during the course of their activities. Noise exposure of 18 teachers from 15 schools was measured using noise dosimeters. The equivalent continuous noise level (L(eq)) of each teacher was recorded during single activities (classes) as well as for the ...

American Industrial Hygiene Association Journal, 1979
Occupational noise exposure was evaluated for eight fire fighter positions on board three types of emergency vehicles. One hundred seventy code-3responses were monitored and sound pressure levels in excess of 115 dBA found. Futhermore, sound pressures exceeding the OSHA allowable level of 90 dBA for eight hours exposure were determined.

Exposure to Noise on Board Locomotives
AIHA Journal, 2003Personal and area noise dosimetry measurements were taken in the cabs of leading and trailing locomotives on 48 trips, under winter and summer conditions, on 9 different routes. The mean equivalent sound level (L(EQ), 3 dB exchange rate, 50 dBA threshold) of the engineers and conductors was 84 dBA during winter and 88 dBA during summer.

Occupational Noise Exposure and the Risk of Hypertension
Epidemiology, 2013Noise may increase the risk of hypertension, but findings are inconsistent with respect to both community and occupational noise exposure. We used a large sample of noise-exposed industrial trades to analyze the association of occupational noise exposure and the risk of hypertension. The 7-year prospective cohort study included 145,190 workers from 625 ...

Hypertension and Road Traffic Noise Exposure
Journal of Occupational & Environmental Medicine, 2007The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between road traffic noise exposure at home and the prevalence of hypertension. We conducted cross-sectional analyses in a large random sample (N=40,856) of inhabitants of Groningen City, and in a subsample (the Prevention of Renal and Vascular End-Stage Disease [PREVEND]) study cohort; N=8592 ...

Aircraft noise exposure and hypertension
Occupational and Environmental Medicine, 2016Increasing traffic by all modes of transport has led to a general rise in noise pollution. The European Environment Agency recently compared data on aircraft noise between 2007 and 2012, and observed that in Europe there had been a general increase in people exposed to aircraft noise.1 Over the last decade, a number of epidemiological studies have ...

This presentation is intended to supply information primarily to the individual who has recently become involved with the many problems of “what are acceptable noise levels” and who has not necessarily been involved in the day-to-day business of noise control.
