Urban Background Noise Mapping: The Multiple-Reflection Correction Term [PDF]

open access: yesActa Acustica united with Acustica, 2014
Mapping of road traffic noise in urban areas according to standardized engineering calculation methods systematically results in an underestimation of noise levels at areas shielded from direct exposure to noise, such as inner yards. In most engineering methods, road traffic lanes are represented by point sources and noise levels are computed utilizing

Enhanced Ultrasound Transmission Through Aberration Layers Using Space‐Coiling Acoustic Metamaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Enhancing ultrasound transmission through an aberration layer exhibiting mismatched impedance with the surrounding medium possesses great implications in imaging and treatment. In this study, we show that a space‐coiling acoustic metamaterial with judiciously tailored structural profile can help improve impedance matching.

Robust Electrocaloric Performance Enabled by Highly‐Polar Frustrated Nanodomains in NaNbO3‐Based Ferrodistortive Relaxor

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
P4bm framework in NaNbO3‐Ba(Ti, Hf)O3 ferrodistortive relaxor entails short‐range and highly‐polar ferrodistortive orders. The abundant highly‐polar orders facilitate to increase entropy change, and robust octahedral oxygen tilt enables to impede thermal perturbations.

Diffraction of Sound Waves by a Periodic Array of Impedance Screens

open access: yesAcoustics
Air-penetrating and noise-canceling constructions are required for numerous noise control issues. High ventilation performance conflicts with effective sound insulation, and vice versa.

Chemical State Detection and Charge Transfer in Complex Oxide Heterostructures via In Situ Auger Electron Spectroscopy

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In situ Auger Electron Spectroscopy resolves oxidation states with high fidelity during the pulsed laser deposition of multivalent perovskite manganate and vanadate heterostructures. The chemical‐state signature is carried by the valence‐electron population of the transition‐metal cation, read out through the relative intensities of Auger fine ...

Reflection and noise in Cygnus X-1

open access: yes, 1999
We analyzed RXTE/PCA observations of Cyg X-1 from 1996-1998. We found a tight correlation between the characteristic noise frequencies (e.g. the break frequency nu_br) and the spectral parameters in the low spectral state. The amplitude of reflection increases and the spectrum of primary radiation steepens as the noise frequency increases (nu_br ...
