The Universal Nature of a Spinozistic Substance
There is a longstanding alliance between rationalism and realism concerning universals. Spinoza does not disrupt that alliance. The nature of a Spinozistic substance, after all, is a universal. That is what I argue here.

Syntax without Abstract Objects [PDF]
In line with the nominalistic denial of the existence of abstract objects, a basic theory of syntax for formal languages is developed and shown to satisfy certain fundamental ...

The author develops an algebraic theory for languages of data words, i.e. words over an alphabet \(\Sigma\times \mathbb{D}\) where \(\Sigma\) is a finite set of labels and \(\mathbb{D}\) is an infinite set of data values. Some of the key notions of the paper are defined relative to a given data symmetry \((\mathbb{D},G)\) in which \(G\) is a subgroup ...

La doble vía del origen del nominalismo en la Edad Media desde la visión de José Luis Romero
The division of causes in Aquinas’ De principiis naturae 5 establishes how the four classical Aristotelian causes may be divided. The text presents several difficulties, the most important of which are the number of divisions and the not-necessary ...

A Burgessian critique of nominalistic tendencies in contemporary mathematics and its historiography [PDF]
We analyze the developments in mathematical rigor from the viewpoint of a Burgessian critique of nominalistic reconstructions. We apply such a critique to the reconstruction of infinitesimal analysis accomplished through the efforts of Cantor, Dedekind ...

Deflating Deflationary Truthmaking [PDF]
In this paper we confront a challenge to truthmaker theory that is analogous to the objections raised by deflationists against substantive theories of truth. Several critics of truthmaker theory espouse a ‘deflationary’ attitude about truthmaking, though

Recursive relational specifications are commonly used to describe the computational structure of formal systems. Recent research in proof theory has identified two features that facilitate direct, logic-based reasoning about such descriptions: the interpretation of atomic judgments through recursive definitions and an encoding of binding constructs via
