Non-Arteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy in Pilots

Aerospace Medicine and Human Performance, 2018
BACKGROUND: Non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) is a common cause of optic neuropathy with the exact pathophysiology unknown. Risk factors include advanced age, small optic nerve head, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and sleep apnea.6 High altitude is considered another risk factor, although only few cases have been reported.

Treatment strategy for non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy [PDF]

open access: yesTzu Chi Medical Journal, 2013
Non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) is the most common cause of sudden optic nerve (ON)-related visual loss in persons over the age of 55. The pathogenesis is still unclear and no effective treatment has been established.

Macular choroidal thickness in non-arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy

Archivos de la Sociedad Española de Oftalmología (English Edition), 2016
To analyse macular choroidal thickness (MCT) in non-arteritic ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION).An analysis was made on 22 patients diagnosed with NAION (22 eyes) and 42 healthy controls (42 eyes) using enhanced-depth imaging of spectral-domain optical coherence tomography.

Optic disc edema in non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy

Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology, 2007
We investigated the clinical characteristics, time to resolution and the factors that influence it, and evolutionary pattern of optic disc edema (ODE) in non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NA-AION). Our study was conducted in 591 consecutive patients (749 eyes) with NA-AION who fulfilled our inclusion criteria.

The Role of Mitochondrial Haplogroups in Non-arteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy

Ophthalmic Genetics, 2008
To investigate a possible association between mitochondrial haplogroups and non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION).We compared the prevalence of various mitochondrial haplogroups in 24 NAION patients and 552 maternally unrelated ethnic controls.

COVID-19 presenting as a non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy

European Journal of Ophthalmology, 2023
We present a case of a 61-year-old woman with an atypical non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NA-AION) as a unique manifestation of COVID-19. Furthermore, the patient worsened after Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine administration. Our findings suggest that NA-AION could result from microangiopathic/thrombotic events that may occur during ...

Corticosteroids for the treatment of non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy

Expert Review of Ophthalmology, 2013
Non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) is the most common cause of an acute unilateral optic neuropathy in patients older than 50 years of age. Its consequences range from temporarily disabling to permanently blinding. Unfortunately, the pathophysiology of NAION is incompletely understood and no proven effective treatment for NAION ...

[Non-Arteritic Ischemic Optic Neuropathy (NAION)].

Klinische Monatsblatter fur Augenheilkunde, 2016
Non-arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) is virtually unknown outside ophthalmology. It is characterised by acute unilateral visual loss, no pain on eye movements and virtually always optic disc swelling. Optic disc oedema resolves within 1 to 2 months, leaving behind optic atrophy. Vision hardly improves.

Intravitreal triamcinolone injections in non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy

Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology, 2013
In non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NA-AION), no treatments have demonstrated to be effective in recovering visual loss in randomized clinical trials. Oral steroids have been evaluated, and small series of intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide (IVTA) injection in NA-AION have been reported.

Sarcoidosis masquerading non-arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy

Journal of Ophthalmic Research and Practice
Sarcoidosis, a multisystem granulomatous disease, can occasionally involve the optic nerve, often presenting as optic neuritis. However, its association with Non-Arteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy (NAAION) is rare and can create diagnostic challenges. Here, we report a case of a 52-year-old male who initially presented with sudden visual loss
