Coagulase-negative staphylococci in bovine sub-clinical mastitis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Mastitis is a common disease in dairy cows. The majority of the cases are sub-clinical, and many of those are due to infection with coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS). CNS is a heterogeneous group of bacteria consisting of a large number of different

Incorporation of Selenium into Sol–Gel‐Derived Bioactive Glass: Influence on Glass Structure, Bioactivity, and its Selective Cytotoxicity

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Selenium was incorporated into a sol–gel‐derived bioactive glass to enable sustained therapeutic ion release. The selenium‐containing glass preserved bioactivity while selectively inducing cytotoxicity in osteosarcoma cells and maintaining osteoblastic viability.

Survival of Staphylococcus aureus ST398 in the human nose after artificial inoculation. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
There is evidence that MRSA ST398 of animal origin is only capable of temporarily occupying the human nose, and it is therefore, often considered a poor human colonizer. We inoculated 16 healthy human volunteers with a mixture of the human MSSA strain ...

Bacteriocins of bovine non-aureus staphylococci

open access: yes, 2017
The non-aureus staphylococci (NAS) species are among the most prevalent isolated from bovine milk and have been reported to inhibit major mastitis pathogens, likely by producing bacteriocins. This thesis is comprised of two sections, focusing on in vitro inhibition assays and in silico identification of bacteriocin gene clusters and bacteriocin ...

Staphylococcus aureus: salt stress, cell wall deficiency, and Biofílm formation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a major cause of chronic infection and is of particular concern in the infection of implanted prostheses. Biofilm formation offers bacteria innate protection from antimicrobial agents and prevents the eradication of ...

Co‐Electrospinning Extracellular Matrix with Polycaprolactone Enables a Modular Approach to Balance Bioactivity and Mechanics of a Multifunctional Bone Wrap

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
The incorporation of nondigested ECM and synthetic polymers into a co‐electrospinning system enables the decoupling of bioactivity and mechanical properties within a single wrap. This technique is used to develop a multifunctional bone wrap that achieves augmented membrane durability, sustained infection control, and enhanced vascularity for use in ...
