Entropy, Extropy and the Physical Driver of Irreversibility [PDF]

open access: yesInterdisciplinary Description of Complex Systems, 2012
We point out that the fundamental irreversibility of Nature requires the introduction of a suitable measure for the distance from equilibrium. We show that entropy, which is widely held to be such a measure, suffers from the problem that it does not have

Impact of Multi-Causal Transport Mechanisms in an Electrolyte Supported Planar SOFC with (ZrO2)x−1(Y2O3)x Electrolyte

open access: yesEntropy, 2018
The calculation of the entropy production rate within an operational high temperature solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is necessary to design and improve heating and cooling strategies.

Enhancing Direct Solar Water Splitting via ALD of Multifunctional TiO2/Pt Nanoparticle Coatings With Engineered Interfaces to GaAs/GaInP Tandem Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Multifunctional atomic layer deposited coatings and interface treatments enhance direct solar water splitting on GaAs/GaInP tandem cells. Optimized TiO2/Pt nanoparticle bilayers ensure durability and catalytic efficiency with minimal optical losses, while H2 plasma pretreatments maximize photovoltage and interfacial charge extraction.

The Maximum Entropy Production Principle: Its Theoretical Foundations and Applications to the Earth System

open access: yes, 2010
The Maximum Entropy Production (MEP) principle has been remarkably successful in producing accurate predictions for non-equilibrium states. We argue that this is because the MEP principle is an effective inference procedure that produces the best ...

Rationally Designed Carbon Nanomaterials for Electrically Driven Solid‐State Hydrogen Storage

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A bottom‐up design principle integrating atomic‐level and nanoscale structural engineering is developed to guide the rational design of electrically tunable, solid‐state hydrogen storage materials that enable non‐dissociative chemisorption under applied electric fields.

Non Thermal‐Driven Photocatalytic Ammonia Decomposition at Near‐Room Temperature on a Plasmonic Nanocone Array

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Plasmonic photocatalytic ammonia decomposition occurs at near‐room temperature on a plasmonic Au nanocone array under visible light illumination. The nanostructure efficiently harnesses plasmonic modes, leading to increased reaction rates upon plasmon decay.

Kinetic Insights into Precursor‐Assisted Soft Sphere Close Packing Revealed by In Situ GISAXS with Implications for Gas Sensing

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The versatile precursor‐assisted soft sphere close packing during slot‐die coating is investigated with in situ X‐ray scattering. The soft crystallization pathways towards a close packing involve multistep structural transitions such as surface nucleation, in‐plane, and out‐of‐plane crystallization.
